The government is set to meet opposition parties to try to reach a deal on the length of time terror suspects can be held without charge.

Tony Blair is preparing to "give ground" on new anti-terror plans after Downing Street conceded he may struggle to get the measures through Parliament.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke is to meet his Tory and Lib Dem counterparts in a fresh bid for their backing.

Mr Blair will try and win backbench support at a Labour MPs' meeting later.

He is preparing for a compromise over plans to increase the current 14-day limit for holding terror suspects to 90 days, which has proved a sticking point for MPs.

Both main opposition parties and a number of Labour MPs oppose the measure.

A Downing Street spokeswoman told the BBC News website: "The prime minister very much favours the 90 days as the right thing to do."

But she added: "He acknowledges the need to negotiate and/or compromise."

A number of Labour MPs say 28 days should be the upper limit and the Conservatives insist it should be much less than that.

The Liberal Democrats believe the limit should stay at 14 days.

Are they doing this only to oppose Blair's Government, or these conservatives actually holding true to the principles of conservatism?
