Plus 75 new Mickey Statues will be in the Magic Kingdom (and I'll be there to see them), then the statues will tour the US, then go to Disneyland and finally be auctioned off at Sotheby’s with the proceeds going to charity

On Tuesday, Walt Disney Co. Chairman Michael Eisner will celebrate the eight-minute cartoon's anniversary by unveiling 75 6-foot Mickey statues at a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Magic Kingdom.

"Celebrate Mickey: 75 InspEARations" will feature statues decorated under the direction of artists, athletes, movie stars and ordinary people.

Sir Elton John, who wrote the music for Disney's movie The Lion King -- and co-wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway show -- contributed a Mickey emblazoned with musical notes and wearing the kind of outlandish glasses that Sir Elton sometimes wears onstage.

Ice skater Michelle Kwan, meanwhile, kept hers simple, giving Mickey a heart and a peace sign to hold.

Other celebrity artists include Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and original Mousketeer Annette Funicello.

On this day in 1966, U.S. Catholic Bishops ended the ban on eating meat on Fridays.

Did the folks who went to hell for doing it before that get clemency?
