Acacia Technologies Licenses Digital Media Transmission Technology to Subsidiary of New Frontier Media

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2003--Acacia Research Corporation (Nasdaq:ACTG)(Nasdaq:CBMX) announced today that its Acacia Technologies group has entered into a Webmaster License Agreement, and Content Provider License Agreement, with Interactive Gallery, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of New Frontier Media, Inc. (Nasdaq:NOOF).
The License Agreements, covering Acacia's DMT technology, resolved patent litigation initiated by Acacia against Interactive Gallery, pending in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Acacia originally initiated patent litigation in the District Court against 39 adult entertainment defendants. Sixteen of these defendants remain in the pending litigation.

Acacia has now entered into 37 license agreements for its DMT technology.

Acacia's DMT technology, which is covered by pioneering patents, relates to audio and video transmission and receiving systems, commonly known as audio-on-demand, video-on-demand, and audio/video streaming, and is used for distributing digital content via several means including Internet, cable television, and wireless systems.

lots of "BIG" guys jumping on boar
Lots of *FORMERLY* big guys jumping on board. The reason is simple. They sat down and did the math. They may only be processing a few hundred grand a year now. Putting them at like 5-10k a year in royalties to Acacia... but in 2000, 99, 98.. they were doing many many millions.

iGallery and babenet are both a perfect example. They are virtually nonexistant now.

So 5 or 10k to ward off the potential litigation over a much larger sum is a cheap insurance policy imho. Specially given that next year thosee companies might make absolutely nothing and pay absolutely no royalties.

Hooper - I think you are correct... also looking at the money Acacia repport they make from these deals, then it looks like many of companies who are settling pays almost nothing... well expect that their name will be used by Acacia whenever they need to show some "poster boys" to the rest of us.
