Vienna sausages either..... We ate Underwood's Deviled Ham in college because we could put it on crackers and call it a meal, so it's not like I have discriminating tastes Apparently Spam is very popular in Hawaii - it was odd going to stores there and seeing "Spam Sushi"

when I was very little my fave meal was kraft mac & cheese with spam. I rarely have it since I left home but every once in a while I have some. My nana does this thing with it where she coats it in crushed up Ritz crackers and strangely enough it is pretty good.

We were poor, so I was raised eating Spam on a fairly regular basis. It certainly ain't steak, but it's better than never having any meat at all; and I must admit that once in awhile the craving hits and I simply must make Spam 'n potatoes with lots of onions!
Luckily, the family likes it too!!! |

My g-father owned a cattle ranch, so we always had at least 2 full sized freezers of beef. I think we would have been disowned had my mother brought ANY kind of processed meat into the house, so I never had it has a kid. "The grass is always greener" when you can feel deprived that you had no Spam as a kid, eh?
But now my curiousity is up I'm going to try it with mac-n-cheese and maybe the potatoes and onions things the next time I hit the grocery store. Any more recipes?

It's under $3 here in L.A. -- which IS a bit pricey if you ask me. I guess the wonder of Spam is that it can be added to just about anything else cheap, and "kick it up a notch" by adding "meat" to the dish (and you don't even have to add extra spices or whatever).
Spam & eggs is another option, Peaches. I'll bet if you did a search for "Depression dishes," you'd find a whole bunch of Spam recipes. My mom was famous for two such dishes: "S.O.S. (Shit on a Shingle)," which is ground beef in white sauce on toast; and "Deviled Toast," which is nothing more than canned tomatoes over toast. |

Ah, Shit on a Shingle! I've made that before, but here we use chipped beef (the stuff in the packages - Carl Budding is the best, IMHO)
But $3 DOES seem awfully expensive when you get can get 1.5+ pounds of ground beef for the same price, which to ME would go a lot further than a can of Spam Then again, remember, I do not yet know the joys of Spam, so I might find out it's worth the extra cost

I thought SOS was made out of corned beef hash? I think it was mostly an armed services dish.

SOS is a sort of generic term for any type of creamed beef on toast, I think. Most people I've ever known think of the "chipped beef" version like yours Peaches.
I think my mom always made the hamburger type because the processed beef is too salty. She had Scarlet Fever as a kid, and instead of breaking out in a rash, they told her it "turned inward" and attacked her kidneys, and she blew up like a balloon. Ever since then any time she has too much salt (which in her case is, "as much as Rox would consider enough to make food tasty"), her hands swell up. Hooper, I've never heard of a corned beef hash version. But there's another really tasty canned meat product! Love hash! The thing that sucks about ALL of these foods is that they play hell with my rather sensitive tummy because of all the preservatives & chemical flavorings. Not that that stops me from eating them when I've got the craving... I just suffer the consequences later! |

And speaking of burgers...I think it was Vick that mentioned Boca Burgers quite a while back, and those things really aren't that bad! I throw one in a pan for lunch and eat it w/o a bun and it's a quick "meaty" treat. For a girl who loves beef, it's a nice fake

my grandfather would never eat Spam because he said he had enough of it during the war to last him a lifetime. I suppose it was the nonperishable aspect of it that once made it popular.

My mother was a depression baby too, and things like spam, fried baloney, canned tamales, and shit on a shingle were staples for lunch our home - and we weren't poor. She considered them treats.
![]() As a college student I ate enough macaroni and cheese to swear off of it forever; and when the revolution comes, anything served hot that involves canned tuna will cause the cook to be sent to a reeducation camp. My preference for SOS is the dried beef in the jars ... not sure if that's Buddig or not. I spend 9 years, 5 months, and 22 days in the Navy, and ate in the chow halls for a good four years of it. A WMD I would recommend we use on alQaida prisoners is powered eggs and spam served cold. Hot (with an adequate dose of Heinz 57 and tobasco) it can almost be considered fit for human consumption; at room temperature you can almost get it down. But cold ...

We were middle class growing up, but my mother was a convenience food freak and we ate Spam and eggs and Spam sandwiches on toast. After I took over the kitchen at 13, we never had it again. My father hated it because they ate so much of it during WWII.
Strangely enough, I like the little cans of deviled spam on crackers (way better than deviled ham), but they're so fatty I had to stop eating them. I've seen it recently in the stores down here in Mexico in FLAVORS...chile and other flavors I don't recall except that I thought that they looked really gross ![]() Quote:
![]() EDIT: PD...did you guys ever have creamed tuna fish? We never ate SOS but instead had tuna. I used to love it. Made it again a few years ago and it tasted horrible. I guess my palate's gotten more refined. Also, you easteners ever have Taylor Ham? My mother used to bring it back from Jersey when she'd visit and make New England Boiled Dinner with it. Oh, the bad old days. I'll take my Wild Mushroom Risotto any day Last edited by originalheather at Mar 29 2003, 01:05 PM |

I went on a 2 week long canoe trip through northern Quebec one summer when I was in college. We never saw another person on the trip so it tells you how remote the area was. All we had was powdered food and spam. Let me tell you, spam on a cracker tastes pretty good after a week of eating powdered food.

************************************************** PornoDoggy, you suggest TORTURE?? Powered eggs have to be THE foulest substance on earth....especially cold. And then you go even further.....Spam is mainly composed of PORK shoulders (totally against the religion of the Muslims)....so you have a double triple whammy there....immoral, foul tasting AND cold. You are so mean.

Geeze - powered eggs - another thing I've lived 41 years without eating?
I'm feeling food deprived Though I LOVE eggs and I'm not even fond of the Egg Beater type things - I think I'll die happy not trying the powdered eggs.Speaking of ham.....down here we have country ham which is shelf stable and can stay in your basement for about 35 years, has your yearly USDA requirement of sodium in a single bite, and is the only thing that should go in the middle of a big fluffy buttermilk biscuit except butter (and margarine isn't allowed in my home, BTW). Damn - it's just a wonderment I have a big ass, isn't it?

Hmmm Heather, did you soak the ham? Where I grew up Virginia ham is for holidays and country ham is for either breakfast with eggs, biscuits and red eye gravy, or its a lazy supper with the same thing, minus the eggs...
The ham that I did for Thanksgiving the year you were out here was not a country ham, it was Virginia style... maybe you just got a bad ham? My mother grew up dirt poor and even though she didn't have to serve it we had it when I was a kid, until we all, including my dad, said no more of that spam crap. Sad to say my mom wasn't the best of cooks so she was rather cyclical thru the things she made... but her fried okra is second to none, I will give her that! I don't use beef in my red sauces, for spaghetti or lasagne etc, I use Italian sausage and then either ground veal or ground lamb, split about evenly between the two... |

Heather, I honestly don't buy a brand - I get whatever is in the store. Country ham is almost by definition way too salty and has a strange flavor If you're looking for a good, smoked soft ham, you can't go wrong with a Honey Baked Ham. I went to school with the founder's grandkids and we always found an excuse to hang out at their house. I still buy at least 3-4 a year.

I think the ultimate weird poverty food in our house was ketchup and mayo sandwiches... Spam actually isn't that frightening - the one thing that I never tried (due to fear probably) is Potted meat food product. 1) What the HELL is potted meat? 2) If you've actually got to put "food product" on the label, it's horror in a can, no? |

Of course I soaked the ham. Cooked it exactly as the smokehouse recommended, but it tasted nothing like the one we had.
Peaches, I've had many, many honeybakeds over the years. The last one was for Xmas this year and it was awful! I guess I got a bad one, my luck, lol Our economy sandwiches are lettuce and tomato sandwiches with mayo. I think my mom was just too lazy to fry bacon lol. I've seen that potted meat product and it scares me, too. Probably something like deviled ham, but gawd, who would buy anything with that name?? |

not poor-related, but here is something you might want to try.
When I make burgers, I put merguez sausages in the ground beef before cooking it. Gives it a great spicy flavor. If you want the "mexican" version, but salsa as a condiment in the burger ![]() Im a decent chef, im just lazy ;p

Spam... MMMMMMmmm MMMMMmmmm Good! With Onions!
I haven't had spam since my early teens, but I remember the smell. I attest my size to the Australian Canned beef we used to eat regularly, with onions. I remember Channel 6 ABC news in Philly talking about Steriods in Aussie meat. It would explain quite a bit. |

I can't eat bread anymore, but while I still could, Sarah, I loved lettuce and tomato sandwiches. They weren't too bad health-wise as long as I used fat-free mayo..but that would kinda ruin the whole point of it, wouldn't it? :P

We couldn't afford Spam when I was growing up. It was a lot of Spaghetti, Mac N Cheese and oh yes - those fried bologna sandwiches. Every time I think of childhood I crave one of those babies on toast with a little mayo. Hub about gacks but then again this is a guy who LIKES those Vienna Sausages. I won't let him eat them if I'm in the same room - they STINK like I don't know what. lol
Weird....the different foods we grew up on. Wonder what our kids will say about what we fed them?

I moved in 600 miles away and in with my bachelor father when I was 16. He knew (and still only knows) how to cook three things:
1) Lettuce Sandwiches. Lots of lettuce, lots of mayo, lots of salt 2) Cheese Toast. And ONLY using Cracker Barrel sharp cheddar 3) The day he figured out he could put Minute Rice into a pot of canned soup and water, he felt he had graduated culinary school We ate out A LOT! |
