Default Website editing

Ok, soooo......I'm old, and a control freak.

I come from the early days, when we used Front page, originally called "front pad"

So, I'm behind the times on web editing.....

If I gotta learn new tricks, I'd like to keep it simple and single "web system" based. (Oh, and PC, not Mac)
As I try to catch up, I'd like to hear opinions as to what people feel is the best web editing software, both features and/or price (add-ons)

Opinions, suggestions, loves, hates?

Thanks

Macromedia Dreamweaver, that's about your only choice. It is by far the best out there.

Although I still use Notepad about half the time for quick pages and edits.

+1

I'd be lost without my Dreamweaver. Howevber, it's now by Adobe. They bought up Macromedia a few years ago. (I'm still using DW8, the last version released before the buy out.)

I always found Dreamweaver held onto my ears too much.

I just login to the server with ssh and edit my pages with vi.

I'm half serious, I do that a lot when just making a quick change or fixing code. Otherwise, I like ultraedit....any programmer's editor will do, but I do like something that does nice code formatting and tag matching.

I do so much dynamic stuff out of php, javascript, etc along with embedding things like flash, that a gui design tool is next to worthless. Especially since I can spit slices and simple snippets of code out of ImageReady, etc.

Wouldn't mind seeing something that can help with css though.

It was a sad day when Adobe bought Macromedia, they now have no competition. As a result, the price is totally ridiculous. To get a decent web design suite is now like $1500-2000 and so bloated you need a hog of a machine to run it.

I spend as much or more time in code view than I do in design (wysiwyg) view when using Dreamweaver. Lots of PHP and template coding.

Dreamweaver 8 uses CSS for formatting by default, and the CSS tools are pretty good. But, you wouldn't want to use it for tableless CSS design. I'm not sure if the newer versions have tools for that or not.

That's the biggest reason I'm still using version 8. I've not yet heard of anything available in newer versions that I'd use enough to justify the expense.

Tableless CSS is still a bit of a pipe dream, the differences between browsers pretty much make it impossible to get entirely right.

Thanks...
Especially Toby and Danny.
Thanks others too, but Toby and Danny I know.
At the end of the day, Toby sees things about how I do, and although I sometimes don't see eye to eye with Danny, I still value your opinion as being sound.

Funny thing is, years ago, when I got whooped up on this before, I bought a full package of the macromedia products in a promotion upgrade deal....version 5, I think.

So based on the opinions I've heard thus far, sounds like I'll be taking a hard look at that, and trying to see if an old dog can learn new tricks.
Any training recommendations fellas?
