Default BBQ Fish?

So I'm watching this BBQ championship thing on some cable channel I didn't even know I had. It's where Discovery Channel used to be and now something called "VS". I thought it was Victoria's Secret...and I do admit that the idea of Victoria's Secret and BBQ somehow appeals to me....

But I digress...

So they're BBQing baby backs in round one...yummy....

BBQ chicken in round two....ok, i prefer pig, but still good....

And in round 3....BBQ Fish.... Fish... Fresh fish, they had to fish thing thing out of a tank and lop it's head off alive then prep him and smoke him. Nasty looking fish too....looked like a carp.

Just absolutely nasty looking....judges didn't seem to like it either. Anyone ever BBQ fish? I know catfish goes well with BBQ, but I've never really consiered doing anything to that other than frying it.

I've grilled steelhead fillets on a Webber kettle. A little mesquite mixed in with the charcoal. Basted several times during cooking with mix of melted butter, lemon juice and fresh pressed garlic. Don't overcook. Like eating candy.

Ever had smoked fish like smoked salmon?

Personally I think fish is best either grilled or raw, yeah sushi. Now if by barbecuing you mean with a dry rub or barbecue sauce, then I'd say I've never tried it, but grilled with some smoking, like Toby suggested is awesome.

Smoked fish is AWESOME. Started eating it in college with the good old boys would go out fishing.

When my brother and son went salmon fishing in Alaska, they had half their catch smoked. There's also a little restaurant on the river a town north of me that has THE best smoked rainbow trout. BYOB. And they might have to use a Cool Whip tub if you need your booze chilled

Quite honestly, it's hard to find food I don't like. It's a curse.

I live in salmon country and we cook it over alder planks, like the west coast indians have done forever. There is no better fish in the world. I like sockeye. If you can't get green alder, try cedar planks.

I bbq fish all the time

Dolphin, swordfish, trout, shark, salmon, tuna, what ever i can find locally you can throw on the grill

some of the lighter fish like trout and catfish you may need to cook over aluminum foil as they flake up and break apart on the grill

but the more solid fish you can throw right on the grill

also smoked Kingfish or any other kind of macrel is awesome

makes great fish dip

Smoked fish, especially salmon, i'm ok with.

But when I think BBQ, I think rubbed meat then soaked in sauce....dont like it dry. Somehow that just doesn't sound good to me with fish.

It would really depend on what your definition of barbecue is then. Most of us consider 'BBQ' to be pork, chicken or beef that has been marinated or rubbed with seasonings and then slow cooked, usually over wood, or smoked, and then often served with bbq sauce. However, to me, the word 'barbecue' means to cook outdoors on a grill of some kind, in which case, barbecuing fish is one of the best, if not the best, ways of cooking it.

Hammer is correct. The word "Barbecue' can confusing, do you mean it to be used as the cooking technique, the sauce and the utensil to cook in. When I moved to Seattle it was the strangest thing to hear folks talk about the "barbecuer". Hell, in the south that is the person that does the barbecuing...not the grill.

But, I did develop a taste for BBQ'd salmon. I cook it at my house all the time in the oven when I can't get to a grill(apartment dweller). I cook it with lemon and butter and garlic until it's almost done, then I turn on the broiler and add some homemade BBQ sauce to finish it. I like mine wet too.

BBQ'd shrimp are another thing, yummy.

I may have to have some tonight!

I forgot about BBQ shrimp....definitely what I consider a BBQ flavor and quite tasty.

BBQ has different definitions depending on region too. Here in Georgia, BBQ typically means pulled pig meat in sauce.

Go to Texas and it means cow, typically cooked in huge portions.
