PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.

The Steelers confirmed the accident for WTAE Channel 4 Action News.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.

Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the Tribune-Review. In the past, he has publicly said he prefers to ride helmetless, which is legal in Pennsylvania.

Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.

I hope he's ok and ready to go by training camp. I wonder if Pittsburgh had a clause in his contract that allows them to take back some of his salary if something like this happens. NFL contracts often do or prohibit people from doing them altogether. I kno that Pitt knew he rode a cycle and didn't disallow it but I wonder if they protected themselves against an accident like this like many teams do.

Anyone who rides a motorcycle is a numb nut and asking to get injured. Unless they are riding on some country road that has no traffic.

The drivers today are getting worse and worse, and when a car runs into a motorcycle - well we all know what happens.

That is why I will drive an SUV even if gas hit $8 a gallon.

You'd think - after Cowher already got on his ass for it - there'd be a rider in his contract forbidding him from going without a helmet...why risk that kinda $$?

ahem!!!... well, being someone that has always had a sport bike or two laying around, i would go as far to say that motorcycles themselves are not inherently dangerous anymore than a gun in a closet is dangerous. it requires an ignorant dipshit to make it dangerous. it takes someone who doesn't possess the skills, the knowledge, the general sense of awareness and the respect you have to have when you ride around others.

most fatalities by far (over 80% in washington state for example) are young kids on liter class sportbikes (1000cc), with no motorcycle license and without proper gear (leather boots, leather gloves with knuckle protection, pants, helmet, jacket (pants and jacket with armor)... usually they are doing wheelies down residential streets at 60-100mph or something stupid on the freeway and going down and getting plowed over by 5-10 cars before anyone realizes, running into the car that pulls out in front of them because they decided to ratchet through the gears on a side street and hit a car at 100mph, or whatever and are almost ALWAYS riding well beyond their own ability.

when you remove the obvious idiots from the equation, i doubt that stats for fatalities or injuries on motorcycles would really stand out at all.

No kidding - but because there are dangerous drives out there, it is a fact of life, it makes motorcycles dangerous.

Fortunately for us Steeler fans he should be able to play.

But it was costly for him

No PA motorcycle license - expired learners permit

Was supposed to film a Cambells commercial this week - goodbye 2 million bucks

Hope his face hurts enough that he realizes how stupid he is.

If I had that kind of athletic ability I would wrap myself in bubble wrap during the offseason to make sure nothing happened to me.

Only thing I would change is wrap myself in hot babes during offseason to keep me safe.
