Microsoft has launched its first professional graphics tool. Its code name is Acrylic and the beta version, which is free until October 1, is already available for download , here.
The software is based on Expression, a graphics application acquired from Creature House in 2003.
According to the program’s description from Microsoft’s site this is an innovative illustration, painting and graphics tool that provides exciting creative capabilities for designers working in print, web, video, and interactive media.
In addition to the Metro proprietary format, Microsoft is releasing another product aimed at competing with Adobe.
It remains to be seen if the giant from Redmond succeeds to outperform Adobe’s Photoshop and Illustrator. Microsoft has to provide innovative tools and advanced algorithms to convince professionals to switch from their current solutions (Photoshop and Illustrator) to Acrylic.
The application has already started on the wrong foot, the developers recommending users to have a Pentium 4 machine, with Windows XP Service Pack 2, 512MB of memory which makes us wonder if this product won’t be another program that requires a lot and does little.
If you want to find out more about this program, visit Softpedia tomorrow and read the review

Have you seen what system requirements are needed to run this thing?

that is ridiculous - but what do you expect from MS?
I'm thinking it's yet another way to push XP SP2...
They can have some success with this regardless of quality a couple of ways. One is by simply undercutting photoshop. Photoshop is a very expensive tool, and there is a market there in the consumer segment for people who have digital cameras and want to play a little bit just cant justify the cost for a pro-level product.
Microsoft could also "cheat" by putting a "lite" version in windows for free and having an upsell.
However, with all of that said, Photoshop has remained the king despite things like Fireworks taking strong runs at it. It is a powerful tool that has a legion of designers who are very familiar with it. The ONLY way you culd get many of them to move over would be to provide a skin for the interface that provided all of the same tools and operate in the exact same manner as Photoshop, plus adding some features and speed. I'm not sure it's possible to do it by adding features alone and forcing designers to otherwise learn a new tool from the ground up.
Also consider that a large percentage of designers are Mac users. Adobe started as a Mac development company and their Mac expertise is strong. Microsoft ports to the Mac, even when they attempt it, are usually poor. They also have resistence from the user community as Bill is considered "the enemy".

I agree to an extent and that would be that I don't fully believe Bill and his troop are going to go balls deep with this. I think they would be very happy at an extra large slice of the market.
Everyone knows MS products run better than anything on MS operating systems, being that they're built with the same flaws and all, so they can take the loyal and use them to push this. The one's in the know will still take Photoshop any day of the week...
BUT I have played a little with the free download this afternoon and I do like it
System Requirements
Minimum system requirements:
• Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2
• 733 Mhz processor
• 256 MB of RAM
• 800x600 monitor resolution with 24-bit color
Recommended system:
• Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 or greater
• Pentium 4 processor
• 512 MB of RAM
• 1024x768 monitor resolution with 24-bit color
i dont see a problem anyone doing anything decent with any graphics program will go with 1 gig or ram minimum.
if you are doing 300 dpi plus images you need more beef.
i am a photoshop fan and hardcore user i will give this baby a test on my box and i will let you guys know.
i am running a p 4 ht 2.8 1 gig ram 2 80 gig hds with a big raid 0 partition 1 partition for OS and 1 for temp files (about 9 gigs for temp files) i use that with photoshop and there is very little to stop me

The best graphics tool is the one you are familiar with.
All they have to do is make it easier to use, shorten the learning curve and make it cheaper and newcomers will learn and use the MS product instead of Adobe. As the years pass Adobe users will grow old and die, and Photoshop and Illustrator will die with them ;-)
Also in a lot of cases large companies decide what software their employees use, MS has the sales networks in place to make sure many choose the MS product.

To know what they're doing and make billions with this product even if it's inferior to Photoshop?[/b]
Damn - to think you could have actually been famous if MS actually took more interest than just stomping your little stolen circle jerk claim to fame into the ground with interns. SP2 officially made you a bitch and google, as well as others just pissed on you for pure pleasure. Go get em' pioneer - you're a piss mop.
Gimp is a kick ass image editor, in some ways better then Photoshop and it's free but I still bought and use Photoshop CS2. I have both on my drive. I play with Gimp but Photoshop is my workhorse.

What did you think I get royalties for each pop-up window? You're an idiot
You gave it away now, you're not even an adult webmaster. You're just here because any other board would ban you, so get to say stuff that you are too chickenshit to tell people to their face in real life.
Because I don't sit on a message board, hoping my virtual ego will be sucked by has beens like you, I've changed I've changed in some fucking way?
Congratulations, you're a board whore.
It's cute to watch the cognitively impotent whine for some digital retribution like the horror of being banned from a message board when someone replaces their viagra with exlax.

At least confucy could hold an intelligent discussion and knew something about the industry.
aeon seems to think I get royalties for pop-up windows, and I'm supposed to be worried about the google toolbar and sp2 cutting into my paycheck, how's that for industry knowledge what a fucking moron
