Following the death of Pope John Paul II, a Nigerian has emerged as the dark horse (nice pun) in the race for the papacy. Cardinal Francis Arinze (72) is tipped by bookmakers as the 11/4 favourite to become the first black pope in history.
Though Bandra’s Ivan Dias was given a slim four per cent chance (1/25) by the bookies, another cardinal contender from India, Kerala’s Archbishop Varkey Vidyathil told Mid Day that any one of the 117 cardinals who can vote have a chance of becoming pope.
Archbishop Vidhyathil, who is leaving for Rome early this morning, is among the three contenders from India.
The other two are Cardinal Ivan Dias (69) from Mumbai and Cardinal Telesphore Toppo (63) from Ranchi.
Archbishop Vidhyathil, who was yesterday put up at the Santacruz residence of Johnson Therattil, president of the Kerala Catholic Association, said an Indian as pope was certainly an attractive idea.
“All religions have originated in India. An Indian pope will be conversant with them,” he stressed.
Vidhyathil also put forward some ideas that, if implemented by an Indian pope, would mark a break with church tradition. He said the celibacy rule for priests could be relaxed.
“Nobody should be forced to stay unmarried,” he pointed out, before balancing his statement with “however, if married, his efficiency will be reduced as he won’t have as much time for people as an unmarried priest.”
He also said the idea of abortion was acceptable in cases where it involved saving a woman’s life. “If the woman is suffering from cancer of the uterus, abortion should be made permissible,” he noted.
Vidhyathil also said he favoured decentralisation of power. “More powers should be given to bishops across all countries. This will help in better work output,” he added.
On homosexuality, though, his stand is firm as the church’s: a big no.

I think the next Pope will probably come from South America, Nigeria or India. There are very few indicators on how Popes are actually elected, but the one modern indicator was the election of John Paul II. Voted in at the time of the Cold War, choosing a Pope that came from 'behind the Iron Curtain" was a "message for the times", IMHO.
So looking at things now, what is the message the Church would want to send at the start of the third millenium? To me, that would be that it is not a white, European-based Church but something more embracing the world as a whole. How best to do that except to take someone from a third world country.
Anyway, that's my thinking. I could be wrong very easily though, because again the Church has never been forthcoming on the behind the scenes politics or method of electing Popes, so they could easily do the opposite. We shall see.

The day a black man is Pope will be a very modern and forward thinking day... i also think it will be the end of the Catholic church in western countries.

I'd narrow it down to the two from South America because of this.
And, because of this too:
America has surpassed Europe, becoming the most Catholic continent of the planet in terms of numbers of faithful. 8 out of 10 Latin Americans are baptized. Brazil, with 161 million inhabitants (88% Catholic) is the largest Catholic country in the world, followed by Mexico, with 95 million inhabitants, 94% of whom are Catholics.
I heard an interview the other day where the guy was talking about the new Pope possibly coming from Nigeria or Latin America, and the person being interviewed said he thought that those nations may be a little too "young" as Catholics. While the Catholic population was growing in those countries, they simply don't have the experience behind them to have a Pope. His bet was that they go back to an Italian for the time being. Maybe someone in his mid 70's who wouldn't last too long...
American's aren't even in the race according to speculation. We have enough power as a nation already.
I knew the Catholic church has been the 'power' for centuries, but had no clue there are so many Catholic converts left. Probably why ccbill wouldn't process for our Priests and Prostitutes site

I was surprised as well, untill I had to go confess and take my communion so I could have my son baptised...
Not surprised at the masses but surprised at how hot the the masses are these days

They canned our paysite because we mentioned the word prostitute too many times for their liking and they had been billing for us for years.
Said it was against their terms of service so when I pointed out that there was nothing about it in their terms of service they changed it to read something like "anything that is illegal in the USA" - even though we were billing through CCBillEU.
Funny I don't see any other sites that deal with the more extreme side of things being canned.
