Citing what it calls U.S. threats to topple its political system, North Korea said today it is dropping out of six-party nuclear talks and will "bolster its nuclear weapons arsenal," North Korea's official news agency KCNA reported. It is the first time the secretive communist state headed by Kim Jong Il has claimed publicly to possess nuclear weapons.

You know what's REALLY scary?

The fact that Prince Charles announced his engagement to Camilla Parker Bowles this morning is getting 10 times as much coverage and attention by the news media this morning.

wonder if that would have happened if we did not have cowboy george as president?
or had we not have demonstrated to the world that we will attack at our lesiure , or if we continually did not snub the UN ?

and dont give me the bulshit about at least they told the truth ( Mike LOL)

because EVERY country lies, why are we any different ? Or russia? or China? or etc..... etc.....

the policy of keeping those countries down WAS working quite well.

Osama is who attacked us, ewverything else is a mistake..
While he still runs free and is stronger now than ever, and potentially has strong Nuclear possessing countries as allies now !

they were already developing nukes during the clinton administration. Bush only made that fact public.

did you ever wonder what would the world would be like if people educated themselves completely on an issue, put all the information in its proper context, carefully looked at every side of the argument, weighed every detail carefully and then started asking questions, long before drawing a conclusion and/or making politically biased accusations?

Here is the "Profile" on him from the BBC

Profile: Kim Jong-il

Kim took on the mantle of his late father, Kim Il-sung
The little that is known about Kim Jong-il, North Korea's leader, conjures up a caricature of a diminutive playboy, a comic picture at odds with his brutal regime.
Diplomats and escaped dissidents talk of a vain, paranoid, cognac-guzzling hypochondriac.

He is said to wear platform shoes and favour a bouffant hairstyle in order to appear taller than his 5 feet 3 inches.

But analysts are undecided whether his eccentricities mask the cunning mind of a master manipulator or betray an irrational madman.

I know I'm an object of criticism in the world, but if I am being talked about, I must be doing the right things

Mr Kim may well encourage the myth-making surrounding him precisely in order to keep the Western world guessing. North Korea has little to bargain with, and ignorance breeds fear.

Film buff

The analysis of him as a mercurial fantasist is certainly beguiling.

He is said to have a library of 20,000 Hollywood movies and to have even written a book on the cinema. He even went so far as to engineer the kidnapping, in 1978, of a South Korean film director and his girlfriend.

This taste for the exotic apparently extends to gastronomy.

Konstantin Pulikovsky, a Russian emissary who travelled with Mr Kim by train across Russia in reported that the North Korean leader had live lobsters air-lifted to the train every day which he ate with silver chopsticks.

The two men shared champagne with a bevy of female companions of "utmost beauty and intelligence", according to Mr Pulikovsky.

Mr Kim also has a reputation as a drinker. He was seen draining 10 glasses of wine during his 2000 summit with the South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and is known to have a taste for Hennessy VSOP cognac.

Strategist

I found him very much on top of his brief

Former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright
But such an unlikely reputation masks Mr Kim's dangerous past.

As head of North Korea's special forces for much of the 70s and 80s, he has been linked by defectors to international terrorist activities, including the 1986 bombing of a Korean Airlines jet in which 115 people died.

Nor should it be assumed that eccentricity means inability. Mr Kim is said to assiduously follow international events on the internet, and some see him as a clever manipulator, willing to take great risks to underpin his regime.

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who has met Mr Kim, said that the North Korean leader was very well informed and "was not delusional".

"I found him very much on top of his brief," she said, although she noted that some of the comments he made about his plans for the North Korean economy sounded illogical.

Birth 'blessed'

The cult surrounding Kim Jong-il extends even to his birth. He was born in Siberia in 1941 when his father, Kim Il-sung, was in exile in the former Soviet Union.

But according to official North Korean accounts, he was born in a log cabin at his father's guerrilla base on North Korea's highest mountain, Mt Paektu, in February 1942.

The event was reportedly marked by a double rainbow, and a bright star in the sky.

The younger Kim graduated from Kim Il-sung University in 1964, and after a period of grooming for leadership, he was officially designated successor to his father in 1980.

But he did not hold any positions of real power until 1991, when he took control of the armed forces - despite his lack of military experience.

Analysts believe he was given the position to counter potential resistance to his eventual succession.

After the death of Kim Il-sung in 1994, it was three years before he took over the leadership of the ruling Korean Workers' Party.

He has been crazy and in power ( and in posession of nukes for a while now)

IT WAS NOT UNTIL THIS PRESIDENT and the actions of unilateralism that we have taken that have prompted this new threat.

Talk about dropping the ball.

No way N. Korea should have EVER been able to build a nuke.

I think this is evidence that sanctions cannot work against a determined enemy.

Our enemies will always break their deals. Words mean nothing to them.

Thanks Mr. Clinton!

Look, the last president to take any kind of bold action against North Korea left office with a popularity rating lower than George Bush scores with former Howard Dean supporters.

The simple fact of the matter is that we wouldn't be doing much more than we are now about this if Iraq had never happened.

Mike wants to blame Clinton, Joe wants to blame Bush ... if either of you would take a gander at Jane's Fighting Forces and and a reasonably acurate World Atlas, you'd see that neither is to blame.

To paraphrase - it's the geography, stupid.

PD... bingo. has nothing to do with American leadership.

my opinion. its about time we adopt assasination as official policy. Its not the Koreans we should fear, its Kim Jong Il. he goes, the rest fall in line.

PD you live in the past. You and those who share your scars from the Korea and Vietnam are putting the rest of us at risk.

N. Korea's nuclear program could have and certainly SHOULD have been stopped.

How many American's die in Korean war? How many would die if N. Korea detonated a nuclear weapon in LA? San Fran? Seattle? Tokyo?

And the hawks are making us or the world safer? Guess what...we just made the world safer by removing a secular dictator and allowing the Iraqi's to replace it with leaders who lean towards an Iranian theocracy.

Allah Akbar

All the while, N. Korea is actually developing nukes - and oh yea...btw, we forgot about this guy:

Call me whacky, but wasn't he the guy that actually blew up a few of our buildings?

Can you say "neocon's pissing into the wind"?

Mikey, Mikey, Mikey ... this has nothing to do with past scars from previous U.S. mistakes.

BTW, if you think I consider Korea a mistake, you are wrong. Truman should have had the balls to fire God before the debacle of Chinese involvement, but other than that, it was the right thing to do.

This has, as I said before, everything to do with geography. The DMZ is 27 miles from Seoul, South Korea. Just the other side of that 27 miles are about a million North Korean soldiers and the heaviest concentration of artillery in the world.

Those pesky South Koreans are the problem. We are there, you know, to defend them. What do you think is going to happen if we attempt a surgical strike? Destroying a village in order to save it is one thing - but destroying the capital of an ally? That's a pretty ballsy risk, even for GW and the neocons.

You may not be able to believe this, but political ideaology ain't got nuthin to do with it. This is just fucking reality ... hello, rock, meet hard place. Been that way since 1953, and it ain't changed a bit whether Democrats or Republicans have been in office.

Mike, we haven't had any options in North Korea since McAsshole overextended himself.

We have more freedom of movement in Iran at the moment - EXCEPT that action against Iran will stir up a shitpot full of reaction in Iraq, which we haven't come close to stabilizing yet.

Not quite the problem as in Korea - but a tough nut on its own.

he.

that sounds familiar.

"going into afghanistan is going to ..... in the middle east.... muslims.... protests..... more terrorists... more terrorism...."

"invading Iraq is going to cause.... in the middle east.... muslims... unstable..... more terrorists.... unstable region will implode...."

My guess:
attacking Iran will............. be no different than Iraq. most likely, the reaction in the arab world would be less than it was for Afghanistan and Iraq. did you know Iraq just elected its own government and there was a higher voter turn out than in a typical US election? not bad eh? Arab countries get quieter and quieter by the day. the real threat to those in power is democracy... not the US and missiles.
