have you tried the melatonin route? I recently stopped taking melatonin and drinking coffee, I think I was in a vicious circle of groggy sleep and then caffeine to wake up. I feel MUCH better now but..... I think Melatonin definitely works! I have a hard time getting to sleep which melatonin helped but when I do fall asleep I will sleep for 8+ hours. I know other people who would get to sleep but then wake up and melatonin helped them too.

I drink a pot of coffee a day and about 6 diet sodas. Probably the problem. I'm addicted to that rush.

Melatonin is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for your Circadian rythm.
If worse ocmes to worse, get some ambien, its a hypnotic, it will help you get a natural rythm.. if you can stay in one.

Actual I have dropped all drinks which have caffeine, guarana, sugar, artificial sweetener etc. for more than 1 month now, and I feel very good. If my energy gets low, then plain water and food will get my normal level back in no time. No problems with sleep either

To be honest man the only thing that helps my insomnia is a couple puffs off the old peace pipe at bed time. It's the only time of day that I smoke but it does seem to help. I tried the melatonin but it would put me to sleep for about an hour and then I would wake up wired like I had just snorted a 3 foot rail.

I'm shocked!

Only Rolo actually seem to be looking for a solution....
drugs to put you to sleep, drugs to wake you up.... seems like the ideal solution... Its certainly the one that requires the less effort and self-control...

Therein lies the problem for me. I swear I think my body believes there are 25 or 26 hours in the day. What starts out innocently enough, going to bed at 1 instead of midnight very rapidly becomes going to bed at 6 am and still having to drag my ass out of it around 9 or so at the latest most mornings. It doesn't take but a few days to get totally out of whack, and then to make it worse I do something like I did yesterday evening and allow myself to fall asleep on the couch for a couple hours around dinner time. (OK, dinner time for most people, my schedule right now is that there isn't one at all).
I don't do pills, so every once in a while when I'm like this, I just have to try and stay up straight through one night to try to get myself beat enough that I'll hit the pillow around 11 pm and actually get to sleep the next night.
actually, there was a study done where they kept someone isolated without any time reference. And one of the first thing that would happen is elongated day cycles.

Now if they would just do a study to show why it is everytime I go in a bookstore or library I have to take a shit...
...why is that btw? That has always bothered me...
Originally posted by DrGuile@Feb 3 2005, 12:58 PM Likewise, if there was 27-28 hours in a day, I think Id be balanced. work for 20, sleep for 7-8... That would be tip-top
It's horrible, especially when the majority of people are not on this cycle! I don't need 7-8 hours of sleep, my body takes about 4-6 a night, provided they are at the right time. I can wake up at 10 am and feel good, whether I went to sleep at 10 pm or 6 am. And my best sleep hours are from about 5 am to 10 am as well.

Been there and done that. Frequently. Usually ends up one night goes longer, it's 4am, next day it's 7am, etc.
Likewise I was (and still am, actually) never fond of pills. If I can do it without meds, I will.
The things you described, I've tried. Let me just go straight out and stay up until I catch up. Usually though that just knocks me out around 3 in the afternoon and makes matter worse.
From my olden days of working the graveyard or lobster shift in Manhatten, I would often "turn myself around" on the weekends. NYC or not, it's a bitch staying up all night long on the weekends and not seeing daylight, so I used to so the "Saturday Night" switch, and make Sunday and Monday "normal days".
The way to do that is we all have a midday lows. Anyone who is used to or remembers the old 9-to-5 workdays recalls how you get that after lunch, 2:30-3:30 "low". That cycle works no matter when you get up and go to sleep there is a natural "low" that hits you. If you were to give in to that low, you can sleep. That's how I'd do the weekend switch overs.
Of course I also had to go start my work week off late Monday night, so that always sucked.
Anyhow, those old tricks don't work that well anymore when I get my schedule blowned out. Guess my body got used to the "sleep tricks" a bit too much.
