Hmmm I am not sure I would want a black box in my car.

I would not want previous driving recorded if their was an accident.

A better solution is to get old people off the road!

Mike, if you are driving a GM vehicle, you already have a basic black box in there. The computer system records a certain amount of time that the car was running and keeps it in memory. One widely reported story had a guy gettting boned after an accident when the car said he was running about 3 times over the limit 3 seconds before impact.

I am a car guy, drive a GTI turbo now, but let me say this:

I find it funny that, in a country where the highest normal speed limit is 75, that cars are not governed or limited in any way. The number of 100MPH+ car chases, the number of young people killed in single car rollovers attributed to speed, etc, it's all pretty stunning. Automobile accidents are one of the highest killers in the 16 to 25 age group.

While I know it unlikely that this would ever happen in the "land of the free, and the home of the atlanta braves(!)", I am amazed that the ideas hasn't come up more often in Washington.

I would be for black boxes, as long as they showed me where mine is so that I cna destroy next time they need data from it

Alex

the black box always survives crashes.

Why not just make the whole vehicle of that material.

Actually cars are governed. My sl55 caps out at 175, the escalade at 100, etc... But you are correct its not low speeds.

Amercian's love their cars, they love their power, and having large powerful engines with a lot of HP. I do not see this changing any time soon.

If anything the gov;t should make it more difficult to get a liscense and drive.

After movin to Tampa, I was shocked how bad the drives were here- WORSE then NO. I have seen more major multi-car accidents here in a year then a lifetime in NO! ( which shocking). Many times the cars are not even fast ones, it has more to do with people not knowing how to drive, or doing other things - an example.

2 days a go a mini-van in front of me was driving eratic on the interstate, going into other lanes, so I decided to jump past her - well as drive by some fat woman is actually reading a fucking BOOK!!! She also had her cell phone plugged into her ear. This woman should have been pulled over, beaten and had her car impounded!

It is not the cars, its the morons driving them!

Oh and its only a matte of time before some liberals start advocating gov't limits on cars....

Try driving up here in Hongcouver.

Straight off the plane , they get a driving liscence for the road and a Tee time at my golf course.

Drive exactly the same on both and clog both them up.

AMEN...AMEN...AAAAAMEN....AMEN..AMEN

I have experienced the book reading first hand, also recently had Jury Duty and a cop that was on the Jury (civil case, so aparently cops can be jurors here) said she had pulled over a guy who was shaving, not a electric razor, but had a cup of hot water on the dash, shaving cream on his face, and using the rear view to make sure he got a good close shave.

I do not want or need a black box, big brother already has too much information on me, of course with the GPS they probably know where I am anyway. Another thing they are trying here in NJ is using easy pass on the Parkway to estimate speed of vehicle between tolls, and mailing tickes to anyone without enough time between checkpoints.

yeah the car companies would definately go for this!!!

as if!! think of how much of the new car market is made up of 18-25s with only a few years (or none!) experience!!

if logic, common sense and what's best for people came into it - cars would only go as fast as the maximum speed limit, we'd all be driving electric or solar powered cars, there'd be no need for oil and no need for war over oil ....

Why, when there is already technology to turn salt water into power, do we still need oil?

Why do most of the funds raised by charity organisations get spent on 'miscellaneous admin services'?

Why do we EVER eat mcdonalds, soda and lollies when we know they are practically poison?

Why do we go to casino's and gamble when we know the odds are stacked way way against us?

The world has got nothing to do with logic, common sense and what's best for people ...

MONEY MONEY MONEY MAAANAAAAY ...... MOOOONEEEY!

If it weren't for the desire for material wealth, we'd all still be living in caves - and there'd be a hell of a lot less of us!!

Quote from the article

National Transportation Safety Board investigators concluded the 86-year-old driver had stepped on the gas instead of the brake and plowed into a farmers market in Santa Monica, California, on July 16, 2003.

End Quote

How the hell is a little black box going to stop this from happening. Oh yea it will be able to tell you what happened, well what happened there is a lady pressed the wrong pedal, but I am sure it had nothing to do with the fact that she is 86.

God knows that human beings do not lose eyesight, have slower reaction time, and are generally weaker as we age, and of course no old person every gets confused about little things.

ReTest driver annually after a certain age, it is not discrimination, it is common sense

Actually Jeff, it was 86 yo guy rather than a lady rolling over folks at the farmers market.

You may have a "blackbox" whether you know it or not. OnStar activates automatically in an accident and records the location, time, etc. All current GM products also record the speed, braking and other measurements the last 5 seconds prior to airbag deployment.

It gets worse. There have already been cases where the FBI has obtained a court order to tap devices like OnStar. Basically, they turn on the microphone and listen without you knowing as long as they have a warrant. One of these cases was appealed to the 9th circuit of appeals in 2001, the justices did add a caveat that says the FBI cannot tap the service IF it impedes with the normal services provided by the device. But otherwise, it's fair game.

With GPS tied to OnStar, with a warrant, no reason they cant track where you go as well.

As for driving in general, the Germans have it right in my opinion. It's not easy to get a license. It requires training and around $1800-2000. Your car also has to be maintained and inspected, no hunk of junks on the road.

The autobahn of course has unlimited speeds in rural sections and the speeds in the other areas near the cities are dynamic...the speed limit signs are digital and max speed is dictated by conditions. You can bust ass at over 100 thru town in the middle of the night, but it might be 60 during business hours or in the rain.

Drivers are also taught to "drive right". You dont get the bullshit with cutting people off or mom and kids cruising in the fast lane at 55 mph in the mini-van while grandpa in the buick is right beside her doing the same speed....and both oblvious to the furious quarter mile of traffic behind them. You can be ticketed for not moving to the right to let a faster driver pass. What we would term road rage or aggressive driving can actually cause you to lose your license.

I'd love to see something similar here.

Driving is NOT a right.

HP, WELL SAID!!!!!

The roads are a *little* better here, but we are like a mini-usa - all that saves us is smaller cars and less people! ... a teenager can get a learners permit at 16.5 and must have the learners for 6 months (can only drive with a fully licensed adult) before taking the driving test. Once they pass the test, its 3 years on a provisional license with only 4 points.

A speeding offence for example would lose you between 3 and 6 points depending on your speed. After the 3 years if you have points left, you can get an open license, which has 12 points. If you lose the 12 points you can either give up your license for 3 months or go back to provisional for a year. I learnt that the hard way LOL

The smart thing to do would be longer training periods and more conditions on getting a license - such as you must take a defensive driving course, pass additional safety tests in dangerous conditions etc.

When I was 17, I thought that if the car didn't fishtail going around a roundabout, you weren't going fast enough!!!!

Damn right HP.

Its just as hard in Britain to get a liscence.

When I took mine in Florida , I mean , come on , my 10 yr old boy could pass. All you do is drive round a car park!! LOL

Even The woman examiner said "Really simple for you europeans isn't it"

Best thing driving on the autobahn is travelling at 150mph and have your indicator light on , and then flash your headlights at the car in the fast lane 2-3kms ahead and watch the driver pull over immediately to let you pass.

Friendly wave as you go by

Nick,

Is also funny to wire your tail/brake lights to a toggle switch on the dash and on those rare occassions where a prick is ridding your ass/flashing at 100 (and pace isn't your fault)... just say it's sure to cause their butt to pucker... hehehe

That said; never saw more qualified drivers than when I lived in Germany. Coming back from Frankfurt on 3 I think, was about 10 of us in each lane going around corner and came upon double trailer (soft side of course) with load in road... Nobody paniced or even traded paint, just made a herringbone on the road w/ cars...
