NYT PAGE ONE THURS: BUSH TO DROP CHENEY GOSSIP
Wed Jul 14 2004 18:21:14 ET
The latest theory about Vice President Dick Cheney's future on the Republican ticket, advanced privately by prominent Democrats, including members of Congress, holds that Cheney recently dropped his personal doctor because of drug addiction so that he could hire a new one, who will conveniently tell him in August that his heart problems have made him unfit to run with Bush!
So reports the NEW YORK TIMES, in a planned Front Page story on Thursday.
Reporter Elisabeth Bumiller is set to kick the gossip into high gear with a 1,600-word speculative, newsroom sources tell DRUDGE.

If Bush dropped Cheney because of "Heart Problems" and picked up someone like McCain would be do better against "the Johns" than if he stuck with Cheney?

In a word: Yes
There has been speculation about this for months. I suspect Bush's people were waiting until they saw who Kerry picked and will wait a bit longer for things to cool down, but at this point, I'd be shocked if Cheney DIDN'T develop some "problems". Now to see if McCain will agree
Originally posted by slavdogg@Jul 15 2004, 05:41 AM This is probably McCain's last chanse if he wants to get into the whitehouse
but would he run against his buddy, Kerry ?
I thought it was interesting how he adamantly denied he would accept a Kerry VP job.
Maybe he and Dubya's people have been considering options all along. Who knows.. it could be nothing, but it would really shake things up.
If Cheney was dropped from the ticket, other than McCain who might be chosen to help keep Bush in the Whitehouse?
That would be an odd pairing given Bush and McCain history. What's the source of that rumor? "Some guy"? The one word missing from that "article" is "conspiracy" as in "The latest conspiracy theory about Vice President Dick Cheney". I think it's BS, something dreamed up by a drunken senator in one of the beltway's best bars and repeated via the telephone game.

I just found this article... He brings up some good points on a Bush/McCain ticket. This was back in Feb, 02, 2004!

PD, you don't make sense....thru your glasses me taking shit 30 mins earlier as usual can be interpreted as attempt of suicide.

he has to, cheney is plaque in the artery of the GOP. like a weight on a sinking sopranos characters feet.
I mean bush is gonna lose, but with cheney, it wont be tight
anyway, hes got a million medical reasons to step down. would not be unexpected

I think there are more people on the fence that don't like Cheney.
Anyway, more than 85% of Democrats want Bush gone and more than 85% of Republicans want Bush again. Historic numbers in combination. It seems that the election will be decided by voter turnout. There are more Democrats than Republicans in the US. Will they show up at the polls?

While I think a Bush/McCain ticket would infuse some excitement into Bush's campaign - I do not see it happening. Bush is way to loyal to dump Cheney. It would have to be CHENEY who came to Bush and fell on the sword. Would Cheney do this?
Many time politicians are insulated from reality..... I like Cheney, I think he is very serious and very competent - unfortunately he has some baggage due to previous job at Halliburton. ( I would how this will effect finding future leaders who take jobs with other large corporations?)
I just don't think Bush campaign has it in them to pull this off.

Yesterday's Gallup poll ... "A majority of Americans, including 7 in 10 Republicans, want Cheney to remain on the ticket, his favorable ratings are no lower now than they were earlier this year"
...
"Additionally, the support level for keeping Cheney is significantly higher than was the comparable support level for Bush's father retaining Vice President Dan Quayle back in 1992. In short, there is little evidence of an increase in a "dump Cheney" sentiment from the American public's perspective. If anything, the trends are in the opposite direction."
