ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Friday he was embarrassed by the Georgia Department of Education proposal to eliminate the word "evolution" from the state's curriculum.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/01/30/ge...tion/index.html

Eliminate evolution from the State's curriculum? Bwahahahaahhaahahaha!

You might as well eliminate the word "addition" or "multiplication" from mathematics.

Ahhhhh... the religious right... always on the cutting edge of science!

Imagine that, Georgia. Now that would have been the last place I would have figured something like this would occur. Georgia has always been known for producing the worlds brightest minds.

Well, they have already eliminated the religion from the schools, why not? Then they can set themselves up as the beginning and the end.

Of course, those who know me know who 'they' refers to...

My mind shutdown after I read something about you homeschooling your spawn.

You do love them correct? You would like them to possibly escape the circle of intellectual violence that has plagued you your entire life wouldnt you?

What you are doing is nothing less than child abuse. Your rousing performance in the thread regarding race relations... man, your kids are fucking doooooomed. The poor little monobrow flipper babies, god have you no heart, no dignity?

You going to teach them this?

Evolution is a theory...not a fact & should be taught as a theory - it can't even satisfy the basics of accepted scientific theory; it relies on being parsimonious almost exclusively. How the hell is something human's can't observe consistantly replicatable & if you can't replicate it, how is it potentially falsifiable through empirical means...

I despise the latte sippin' twits who buy into science as a fact...they're no different than religious fanatics. They'll swallow anything science feeds them & stroke their own sheepish brain under the delusion of being "educated/enlightened".

Absolutely incredible when the powers that be sit there and wonder why Georgia is 50th (though we might have moved up to 49th...) in the country in terms of PreK-12th grade education.

Thankfully I no longer have a kid in the school system and even when I did he was in a charter school. I've known parents who would rather live in a 1 BR apartment and send their kids to private or charter schools here than send them to public school and home schooling is HUGE in GA. Wonder why?

Though in all fairness, it was merely a proposal and I predict it will never be passed. But it does show you how screwed up the great minds are who are running the show.

And I won't even get into the grade inflation that goes on so sub par kids can get the lottery sponsored college scholarship..............after all, that's so much easier than actually educatiing them.....

edited to make corrections so it didn't look like I received most of MY education here in GA :P

Do you even know the what the criteria for a scientific theory to be accepted are? The fun part...most scientists I've met wouldn't ever call scientific theory a "fact". It's the believers...that love their "facts".

Well the great thing about being an all powerful God is that you can set forth what we consider Evolution. They are not mutually exclusive.

However in school, public schools there should only be taught science.

So you read some drivel over on www.creationscience.com and think you have it all figured out, huh? Somehow the readings of a few nutjobs at the fringe gives you a superior view and insight into scientific methodology?

With even a modicum of understanding of science you would realize that
all science is theory. Einstein properly labeled his two great works "The Special Theory of Relativity" and "The General Theory of Relativity". Even today, 400 years after the fact we refer to Newton's works on gravity as 'The theory of "Universal Gravitation" '. If I remember correctly one of the three published teachings of Richard Feynman called "The Feynman Lectures on Physics" includes a discussion on "the atomic theory of matter". Not "atomic fact" but "atomic theory". Not "relativity fact" but "relativity theory".

So what do you say? Should we not discuss general and relativity theory or the atomic theory of matter because of your concerns with them being "just theories"? Should we abolish all discussion of black holes and quarks in the schoolroom? Should we go back to the days of Aristotle when so much of science was simple classification? "This is a mammal", "this is a star".

Evolution not falsifiable? Really. The evolutionary theory existed long before the discovery of DNA and DNA comparison techniques. What if a pig and a human were more closely related by DNA comparison than humans and chimps? Wouldn't that have thrown a cog in the whole apparatus of evolution? What if whale DNA had turned out to be more fish-like than mammal-like? Hmmm.

Science does not proclaim itself in facts. It proclaims itself in theories. Science must be taught his way. That is what science is. So you wish to exclude one particular theory because it disagrees with your world-view?
And what to think of groups of people who disavow the atomic theory, quantum theory, or relativity theory on philosophical grounds? Ban those subjects in the classroom too? We would listen to a group of Bible thumping parents in Kansas who want to ban Einstein's theory of special relativity in the classroom on the grounds that it is "just a theory"?

You ask "How the hell is something human's can't observe consistantly replicatable & if you can't replicate it, how is it potentially falsifiable through empirical means"? Take the case of relativity theory and it how it leads to the prediction of black holes. How much empirical data do humans have on black holes? What is the totality of our knowledge on black holes in the universe? Great, we've found some things in space that look like what we were expecting to find given current theory on black holes. Oh, yeah .. look at Cygnus X-1. Great! Look at those particle ejection jets at the poles. Cool. We were expecting to see those. But they remain that - theoretical. You keep working through the equations to see if the theory is in fact consistent with the rest of known science. Sometimes it is. Awesome. Sometimes it isn't. Back to the drawing board.

I understand that you are not supposed to eat from the forbidden tree of knowledge. Well, don't and that's fine for you. Why do you expect everyone else to live that way though?

let's see...you might take a look at the genetic structure of rats and compare it to humans as well - what does that tell you & how does that present any viable empirical means to falsify a theory that takes 1000's 100's of 1000's and millions of years to manifest?

This whole thing in Georgia is nothing new ... born-agains got control of the State Board of Education in Kansas 5-6 years ago (+/-) and tried the same thing - in fact, I think they got pretty far along in the bureaucratic process required to actually eliminate the teaching of evolution in the schools there.

Oh aeon, so clever. The usual pseudo-intellectual assault on one's "english comprehension skills " complete with the "you might read what I wrote" line. I think you've confused Oprano with the newbie board. Wrong audience, Mr. Bryan.

Here is what is all too obvious from your posts. You did not say that the concept of theory should be taught or that a discourse on, say, Popper's works on scientific methodology should be taught in the classroom. You did not say that relativity or atomic physics should be taught as "theory not fact".

Despite the fact that the subject of the thread is evolution, if it were really your contention that "what a theory is" should be taught in the classroom you would have refered to that general principle rather than just saying that evolution "is not a fact".

The scientific paradigms you refer to such as "consistantly replicatable" (sic)are nothing more than guidelines. Guidelines which are broken all the time. Much of physics today cannot be considered consistently replicable. Mathematics derived from axioms leads to predictions of exotic objects which cannot be directly observed. Verification is a tricky subject. One can use the equations of general relativity to approximate the path of a spaceship in the nearby gravitational field of two rotating black holes. How does one verify it's accuracy? But now what? Have we left the realm of science or are we still in it? I'd say we're still in it and so does every physics journal out there.

I didn't say the theory of punctuated equillibrium should or shouldn't be taught, Popper's falsification - didn't mention that being taught or not taught either, wait a minute - I didn't mention hume's problems with causation either...damn - forgot to mention whether the theory of anti-realism should be taught or not taught - I forgot to mention whether the theory of dry anal sex over lubed too should be taught.
