Reliving Spam's Glorious Past

By Michelle Delio 02:00 AM Jan. 15, 2004 PT

NEW YORK -- Suitcases packed with pornography, bottles of penis-enlargement pills, bank statements detailing the failures of work-at-home schemes, pseudo love letters and dioramas of deposed dictators -- this is just some of the art on display at Reimagining the Ordovician Gothic: Fossils From the Golden Age of Spam.

The show attempts to envision how archeologists from the future might reconstruct early 21st-century life if e-mail spam promoting sex, drugs, insurance and investment opportunities offered by deposed African statesmen were the only cultural artifacts available for study.

Opening Thursday at Spaceworks at the Tank in New York, the show uses traditional museum-style display and documentation techniques -- time lines, fun facts, graphs, charts and interactive displays -- to transform standard spam into a collection of rare artifacts.

"We hope to turn mundane junk mail into something mysterious and strange by examining the true weirdness that lies at the heart of it," said show curator Jesse Jarnow.

"Spam is a hot-button issue these days, that button usually being the Delete key, and for good reason: It has taken something wondrous, the Internet, and turned it into a source of frustration. But it doesn't have to be aggravating. The spam we get every day is every bit as fantastic as the Internet itself."

Jarnow has devised a sort of Dewey Decimal System for spam, numerically classifying each missive by content and the cloaking device that the spammer used to hide his or her identity or intentions.

The content categories Jarnow uses won't be a surprise to anyone who's checked their e-mail inbox lately: Spam is sorted into porn, goods for sale, real estate, urgent messages and scams.

But the cloaking classifications will probably be obvious only to those who really study spam. So Jarnow created dioramas and light boxes with complex charts and diagrams explaining how and why spam is created and sent. In keeping with the show's theme of archeological reconstruction, this information is a mix of truth and wild guesses presented as somber fact.

"One chart analyzes the tangle of spam header information from the perspective of somebody who hasn't the foggiest about what it all means but has to derive some system to explain it," said Jarnow.

Another piece comprises a series of dioramas incorporating pleading e-mails claiming to be from beleaguered widows, chief's sons and formerly high-ranking government officials who now want assistance in getting a large sum of money out of their country -- and will reward you handsomely for your help.

"Though -- obviously? -- these are just moneymaking schemes, what's pretty amazing to me is that almost all of the names and events that these e-mails describe are real," Jarnow said about the e-mails.

"And in 100 years, when people are looking back, what's going to separate these messages from real news? These are stories from the fringes of global society," Jarnow said. "And from the perspective of a future historian, I think these e-mails fairly accurately capture the sheer chaos of the world their senders live in."

Golden Age? That would mean that it's value has come and gone. I do not agree.

We are sending more right now per second (2400/sec) than we did 2 years ago. We are seeing higher profit margins and have a backlog of Prepaid Contracts.

I say the Golden Age is still here.
