Ifn your counting the BBS which we used credit cards doors to peddle smut....then you need to add the early 80's button.

But didn't get into the adult side on the net until 99
Renegade ... wow haven't heard that in awhile.. I was co-sysop on probably a dozen different boards running that back in the 80's. I started my first bbs in like 85-86 running Fido 8a I think it was.. man that was a long time ago.

Brad, now there is an original idea
I remember when our server was a 486DX266 with 16MB of RAM and a 20MB harddrive and we thought we was slamming some power....
We were not big by any means, but we took our fair share of traffic, never made much money... Every cent went back in, more phone lines...lol...that was the bandwidth back then,...lol...give me more lines and more motherboards we could drop a modem on to... had wiring all over the fucking place....
Doing graphics using RIP was always cool.... remember when I first learned RIP and could get away from all the ANSI graphics shit....
Investing in adult since 1984. Yipes put me out to pasteur already for Christ's sake.

Hahaha... Still remember when my site went live... February 26, 1996...
I had been online as a surfer before that for a whole 3 months
I seriously believe I was one of the first dozen or so sites that actually
had legal ownership of their content at that time.
First host was a local internet cafe with a 128K connection to the net...
48 hours after I had submitted to PK, the host shut me down when their
homepage was taking 30 minutes to load... heheh
Moved to the second biggest internet host in Buffalo a week later...
for a long period of time I was accounting for 10% of their total
bandwidth... all with only 3 -5K uniques average per day...
Host would quietly show my site to clients who refused to believe
them when they were told that a single site could push thru 1+ Gig
of bandwidth per day... was paying an average of $10 per Gig at
that point...

Wildcat
RBBS
TriBBS
So far these are the ones I remember..
Off the top of my head, the two biggies you missed are TBBS and MajorBBS (Galacticomm).
If you start getting into other platforms and all of the little shareware and freeware BBS software that was out, there'd be dozens on the list.
In terms of $$$ there were really only 4 companies out there that really made a decent sized business out of their BBS software, and interestingly enough, none of them really managed to adapt to the internet and the web. There's likely a lesson to be learned there about keeping up with change as they all waited too late to try:
Wildcat -- Mustang Software -- These guys were the king in the hey day of the BBS in terms of financial success. They bought up the best of the shareware for all of the supporting programs (Qmodem, SLMR, etc) in addition to having one of the slickest BBSs out there. They pulled off an IPO successfully. But they never turned the corner onto the net. They focused on email and messaging eventually settling on a couple of vertical markets (I believe customer care was one) and then the company was sold and the remnants resold a couple of more times after the dotcom burst.
PCBoard -- Clark Development -- They were screwed when David Terry (lead developer) left. Lesson here is underestimating the value of a key player. They had a web project in development, Meta Worlds, but couldn't make it work without him and missed several ship dates. No one was buying the old shit because the new shit was promised to be just around the corner. So they ran out of cash, and the joint ended up padlocked and auctioned off.
MajorBBS -- Galacticomm -- They saw the future a bit with pay per minute peep shows and 1 on 1 chats with girls. But it was via dialup. The net squashed them like a bug once these same shows could be done within the browser directly via plug ins and what not. They were bought and sold several times as well, the bones of this one are scattered among several "community" solutions.
TBBS -- eSoft -- They're the last ones standing, but TBBS is long gone. They perhaps did the best job of evolving. They've abandoned the BBS as far as I know, but their internet adapter (IPAD) that they developed for the BBS evolved into a nice little internet appliance for small offices. They did an IPO as well. As far as I know they're still treading water at least.
What I find strange is that none of them transitioned the concept of a true BBS community to a web product. And in fact, I think there's still a market for that as you currently need multiple packages to emulate those same basic functions that were used to build those early online communities (message boards, chat, file sharing, interactive games, etc).
Someone was bitching about old timers shouldn't be proud in another thread. The value here is history, knowing it, learning from it. Those who do not know and understand history are doomed to repeat it.
think I'm per 1996. first internet account I had was for $ 20.00 for life time.
Only got newsgroups. can't remember what year. Was doing online Maint. in the early 80's with Remote2 (cross talk product) so the customer had 2 pay for the phone time.

TBBS I'm having a hard time remembering.. MajorBBS I do remember.. wow this is a history lesson.
I remembering having to make long distant phone calls because I couldn't find any boards in Dallas. Eventually they did catch on..My first bbs was only online at night because I didn't have an extra phone line.. haha.. I used my parents house line in the mid 80's. Up from 10:00pm - 8:00am.. seems insane now.
A friend and I wanted to start up a big bbs in what must have been 1990. We came to the conclusion that people would pay for porn online and there wasn't alot of competition for that sort of mega bbs in Dallas/Fort Worth. We didn't have the money to do it back then.. all the computers, phone lines, and modems it would have taken put it out of reach. I thought porn was the place to make money back before the compuserve, prodigy, and ultimately the internet became the hot ticket.
It would have been cool to get into that back then with a big bbs based porn site but I think I would have lost my ass on that project. The bbs' didn't have long enough to live though I didn't realize it at the time. I forgot about trying to make money with porn till 97. Then I started down the path I had wanted to go down in 90 all over again. This time it worked... the internet hasn't been replaced by the next best thing like the bbs did.
I started a little local L.O.R.D. Net going when I came back to Philly from NYC. Primative ... one board would have the game for a day, pack it up, ship it to the next, etc. Had 12 boards in all doing it in the Metro Philly area for about four months. (Until, of course, one sysop kept it up for a week when he went on vacation and blew it all for the rest.) .... Ah, the good old days.
