but like everything else in this industry big egos fucked it up
but in reality WTFRC for a design award other than designers
AVN is too busy pushing you to buy ad space and a booth at INternext while going behind your back to push out the smaller companies.
THey are the community outside of the community...aka porn royalty.

Yeah they had one awards show, which was a total clusterfuck!!
The egos and mismanagement destroyed it.
AVN is a pretty pitiful orginization.... they are here to make as much money from webmasters as they can, while promoting the BIG BOYS. Nothing more nothing less. They are not the friend of the average webmaster/program.

Yeah we won 2 awards at the show.... the idiots at AVN misprinted the domains in the magazine, so it did not help us at all.

I'm hearing from a lot more folks this year that are NOT doing booths than ARE... and those that are starting up NEW booths are piggybacking with other companies, sharing costs and whatnot. Smart thinking IMHO.
I know I was looking into room drops and bag inserts and about crapped - the prices just keep going up and up and up! Add in booth costs, staff costs (especially for our Internationally located team!) and it gets outrageous REALLY quick.
While I absolutely LOVE the January show - I mean, it's cool to have that start-of-the-year reunion in Sin City with folks I sometimes only get to see once every 12 months... I am sort of hoping that smaller gatherings like Webmaster Access get up and going and take some of this business away from the gigantic expos.

It's long overdue...
I keep teasing it but its a future thread...near future.

When I found out we had signed up for a booth in vegas, I said fuck it, throw down some couches and that is it. I think we will have a bar (sponsored by someone else) and couches, and thats it... It is all such a waste.
We try to do 'the midsize show. Enough going on to attract the business minded people from all over - that you do not get to see at the regional shows - yet small and inexpensive enough that it is affordable. We concentrate on education & networking opportunities.
San Diego will have rooms at $135. Many inexpensive sponsorships, and about a dozen spaces in the networking hall for those who want to 'show & tell. Those spaces include everything (draped tables, chairs, carpet, elec and Internet access0 for only $1,500 - not a budget breaker. A marketing opportunity - not a 'big dick contest. I have always tried to do the kind of show, that I like to attend. Nothing more - nothing less.
Actually, with companies cutting back their budgets - I think Cybernet will be more successful that it has ever been. Why? Because you can get a lot of 'bang for the buck.

... and I think we've seen enough dick over the years to last even THIS industry a long while!
Just think about how much $$$ has been wasted over the years on these things - what did it change? What did it do? We've all still ended up in the same place... kissing credit card company ass and battling freeloading patent holders for the right to continue doing business.
Hopefully we've learned something from this - some of the best gatherings I've attended were low-scale, no-frills get togethers... and I've made some of my best contacts within the industry between workshops, on the way to the expo hall, in the elevator & hanging out in the lobby.
Oh and Gonzo.... spill dude or we'll slap it out of you in Vegas!
I can remember FM pouting in the elevator in Montreal after Kara's won the award of CE. He looked like someone stole his candy! Also could not figure out how Mike won 2 awards!

Haha.. I remember that night : )
Mike was so cool on the stage.. in fact I remember him saying he was going to give up building sites and go on tour... but that never happen.
I think R-n talked him out of it !

One of the worst days of my life! But I was too stuborn and self righteous to let it get me down. Don't know why I came up with the 'granny porn idea. I think it was to keep from crying. Dave always said I was at my best when challenged.
In fairness to Internext, all those add-ons happen at every tradeshow. Anything you cant bring with you, you're going to pay thru the nose for.
But the mainstream shows have been hurting as bad or as worse for many of the same reasons. The bubble burst, and everyone is taking a look at return on investment and figuring out that with the web the shows are losing value.
I remember one year where the entire main hall of the LVCC was pretty much home to 3 booths (Microsoft, IBM and Compaq). They took up entire bays of the convention center. Everyone else was rung aroung them, co-exhibiting with them as a partner or relegated to North Hall, the Hilton, Sands or any of another half dozen lesser locations.
For anyone in position of being a purchaser of IT, Comdex used to be a must-see because that was where you'd go not only to meet your vendors but learn about what's coming and what's new and see it demo'd. Now, we all get all of that stuff the minute it is announced on the web. Who needs to go to a show, walk several miles of aisles and tote a bag full of glossies now?
For our industry, it used to be a dick waving contest driving the size of booths. Now I think it's mostly about putting faces, conversations and handshakes with the names you do business with already and maybe, just maybe discovering some companies you weren't aware of already to hook up with when you get home.
Parties, hospitality suites, etc are perhaps better than the show floor for these activities. However, there's that large percentage of webmasters who aren't business minded, they're party minded. They do not run companies, but they have enough coin to support themselves thru school or whatever and buy a few toys. They might accidently get a little business done, but they show up to party first. They see the shows as a social event first, business event second....if at all.
BTW - we do not have Convention Services at San Diego. Everything is being handled by the hotel..... NO DRAYAGE. But, then we only have a dozen spaces in the networking hall to fill - and everything is pretty much included - so we don't need all that add-on stuff. Keep it S I M P L E !
