Leonardo Dicaprio. Great actor? Will become one?

Leading actor in Titanic, the top grossing movie of all time. Played great roles in Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries. His last two roles were in "Gangs of New York" and "Catch me if you Can".

I say he's been a teen idol who is an excellent actor who may become great.

If he dies soon, then he will probably be remembered as one,
but he hasn't really played a great role yet.

I fucking hated titanic, probably because I knew at some point in the film I was going to hear that French bitch sing.

He was o.k in Romeo and Juliet though.

He was good in Catch me if you can. But he was over shadowed by Tom Hanks.

He's getting better and better as an actor.

not great but underrated.

Prior to Titanic he did a number of 'art' films that he was above average in and he was nominated for an Oscar for Gilbert Grape.

He will be considered great over time. As his roles mature and he matures.

An example:

Tom Cruise. Cruise wasn't even in the same league as Dicaprio at the same age. But, over time Cruise is now considered a very good actor and probably getting better and better with age (Vanilla Sky, Minority Report).

Dicaprio is certainly a better actor and more accomplished for his age. I think he'll end up being considered great. Not Deniro great. But great.

But, then again, there is The Beach. <_< (Actually, that movie didn't bother me as much as most people. I think it is one of those hate to love it movies for me. Not quite as bad as Joe vs. the Volcano though.)

Yes, it's the true story of Frank Abagnale. Read the book, it's even better (much better). My father gave it to me when I was a teen.

The Beach is a very good movie. The problem was that it was pitched towards the people that watched Titanic and it is nothing at all like it. Think Lord Of The Flies and you are closer.

I read the book too... that's why I didn't enjoy the movie...
movies always suck if you've read the book....

Yup
I actually liked it too

The Beach was made by the same guy who did 28 Days Later, the kickass apocolypse flick (I refuse to call it a zombie movie).

I think a lot of the backlash against DiCapprio is mainly because 13 eyear old girls drool over him, but he is one of the better young actors out there.

While I hated Titanic, I thought he did a more than adequate job and I was really impressed with him in Gangs Of New York (of course acting opposite Daniel Day Lewis giving the performance of the decade didn't hurt)

ah, but to me, he'll always be the streetwise kid, Luke, the Seavers took in on the series "Growing Pains" ;-)))

I don't necessarily like him, but I think he's a great actor. Especially in Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries.

He was also very good in This Boy's Life (where he actually held his own with Deniro btw) . Romeo & Juliet may have launched him into the mainstream but he was around in art films for a while before that. When he starts taking slightly older roles he will grow into his talent.

Gilbert Grape was definitely awesome - and that's from someone who didn't like Leo because of the drooling 13-year-olds... unfortunately getting put into that category generally makes me skip someone over, but if he finds roles that can showcase his abilities instead of just "catering to the Titanic crowd" (as mentioned earlier), then he could become great.

We're running out of "greats" it seems - would be nice to see some actors work on develop their acting skills and earn those awards and box office dollars...
