For those that care....
A couple years ago I got ahold of some 100+ year old oak. It had been painted about 50 times but I brought it home and ran it threw the planer a few times and it turns out to be absolutely beautiful lumber. Anyway, I planed it all and it's been sitting on a rack in my garage waiting to be put to use one day. I finally decided to use it to reframe the windows on the inside of my house last week. Anyways all went well and I was working on the final window. I picked out a piece of lumber, cut it down to size, and starting running it through the table saw to rip the painted edges off. Part of the way through the board I felt something hit my leg, didn't think anything of it because it didn't really hurt. I finished ripping the board and was adjusting the rip fence to cut off the other side when I felt something running down my leg. I look down and see that my pants are turning red. So I run into the laundry room and drop my drawers and I have blood gushing out of my leg and I had no idea even what hit me. I grabbed some paper towels and put some pressure on it but the blood wasn't stopping. It's funny how when you injure yourself it doesn't hurt as much until you actually see it. My leg started going numb and I was in a lot of pain at that point. I thought about driving myself to the hospital but since I was getting dizzy and it's a half hour drive and I drive a stick I figured that wasn't such a good idea. Realizing the phone was upstairs and not wanting to bleed all over the house I wrapped my leg in paper towels and taped it on with duct tape. (see there are a million uses for that stuff) I hopped upstairs and I called 911 figuring the paramedics would show up, patch me up, and that would be that. Didn't work out that way unfortunately. By the time they got there I was about ready to pass out. They unwrapped my leg and I could see by the looks on their faces they were concerned. Anyway they tried to stop the bleeding and couldn't but they started an IV and that made me feel better. Next, the cops showed up and when he looked at my leg he starts asking who shot me. Gotta love idiot local cops. Now I'm in the emergency room, then xray, then surgery. Turns out, there was a drywall screw broken off in the board I was ripping. I hit it just right or wrong and it hit my leg like a small bullet. Unfortunately it punctured a vein and did some nerve damage. So Saturday night they took the screw out and repaired the vein. Then on Monday I had to have surgery again to fix the nerve damage. Never had any surgery before then I have it twice in 3 days over a freak 1 in a million accident. I was released on Tuesday and spent the rest of the week at my Aunt's house since there are no steps to deal with. Anyway, I'm finally back home and more importantly online. I'll be gimping around for awhile but should make a full recovery. What really makes me  is tonight is the first night of our golf league and I can't play. So, hope your week was better than that.

Damn Ulfie, that sucks...
I worked in a cabinet shop for about four years, and everyone called me "Safety Sam." Well, I'm about the only one who walked out of there with all my fingers. I have seen some nasty accidents. One guy at a millhouse up the road from our shop actually got stabbed to death by a piece of wood that shot out of their rip saw. Once in a while in our shop we would find bullets in the lumber, but luckily I never had any bad accidents. I'm glad to hear you're going to be okay. |

More importantly - I hope you didn't get any blood on that beautiful piece of wood!
(the oak - not what you saw when you "dropped your drawers") ![]() Glad you're OK!! And of course, it's a good thing you DIDN'T drive...Truly one of the most bizarre freak accidents I've heard of. Did you at least get to enjoy the ride in the ambulance?

Wow Ulfie! Mike's right - that IS a scary story! But do yourself a favour - if anyone asks, just tell them you go shot.... that's much cooler than "I was cutting a board and a screw flew out and hit me in the leg" !

Riding in the ambulance was kind of neat, never been in one before but I hope it's the last time. I think the rest of you guys are right. I'm going to have to craft some great war story. Back when I was with the CIA... I doubt anyone would buy it though. ![]() Vooman, I know what you're talking about. Woodworking is a hobby of mine and I have just about every power tool you can think of. Safety always comes first. Being an avid golfer and working on the computer all day I always worry about injuring my hands or eyes. Unfortunately, power tools are dangerous and you are never 100% protected. Danny, hit me on icq, I'll be on tonight and this weekend. I have to go out now and try to drive to get some food but will be back later. |

Damn, ulfie ... glad you are okay!
The law firm I worked for represented a major manufacturing firm with subsidiaries that made power tools and ladders. We had two partners, anywhere from six to thirty associates, and a whole herd of legal assistants and clerks that did nothing but work on stuff for them, almost all of it product liability, and 90% of it frivolous. My favorite nominee for the Darwin Awards was a professional roofer who had been a union safety trainer at one time who was working on the roof of a bank's drive-through awing. He used the fly (top part) of a disassembled 40' extension ladder, placed it upside down on sloped wet asphalt pavement, and proceded to climb up toward the roof carrying a mop and bucket. The entire accident was recorded on the bank's security camera, although you could barely see the part where the mop handle entered an eye socket. HBD (legal term for "he be dead") and the widow sued the ladder manufacturer for a defective product after she'd blown through an unbelievable amount of money from workmen's comp and insurance.

Holy shit Ulfie! Glad you had the instinct to put the duct tape on there, that probably saved you - glad you're okay.
Is the nerve damage going to be permanent?
