People don't realise just how common sexual abuse is. I think the last statistics i saw about the catholic church were that 1 in 25 priests had been accused of molestation. Fucked up, indeed, but sadly not very far out of line with the rest of the population. What annoys me about the catholic church situation is that people aren't aware of the general population statistics. So people focus on the catholic church when the issue comes up, not realising that there's a good chance someone living just a few houses down the street may be a pedophile. I think it gives people a false sense of security to think numbers like that are isolated in the catholic church. That scares me.
