another point loki, a 'portal' is kinda just a big branding exercise, so pull in EVERY resource you can think of for branding your central site.

eg:

http://www.purve.com/store.html
I've never sold ANY cafe press items, probably rarely will ... but fuck the thumbs look professional and make my site look like it has an awesome store!!! LOL

your portal can have as many sub categories and sub domains as you can find content to fill it ...

again you hit the nail right on the head,

Currently I'm pushing viewers to our tgp, our paysite, our freesites and our avs sites, as well as gatherign as many sponsors that fit our niche as i can find.

At firt I wanted to build the biggest 3D Adult portal and then route the traffic where I wanted it to go, but then after the end of the first day I noticed I had made a sale from the portal itself, then my whole idea of the site changed.

what i'm thinking now while this market style is still pretty much untapped is how benificial might other niches be in this format?

Props on your store, mine got shutdown by those bastards cuz my stuff was concidered a violation of their tos lol
