Speaking of women.... Hell hath no fury like a scorned woman....
http://news.myway.com/top/article/id/37976...24;reuters.html SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - The bitter divorce may be final but the fight isn't over for the ex-wife of a U.S. congressman who now wants to unseat her former husband. Becky Whetstone filed papers this month to run as an independent for the 20th District seat held by Charles Gonzalez, a Democrat who represents the area in San Antonio. "I believe the district doesn't know Charlie very well, and once they learn who he really is, they will not want him to represent their interests in Washington, D.C., or as a role model for their children," Whetstone said in a statement. When asked if the run for Congress was an act of revenge, Whetstone told Reuters, "Absolutely not." Gonzalez, a third-term congressman, brushed off his ex-wife's candidacy as a stunt. "There is no doubt that Becky's announcement of her intent to run for Congress against me has a certain 'entertainment' value," Gonzalez said in a statement after her filing. "Seeking public office, especially the position of U.S. representative, should be about serving the public, not about entertaining the public," he said. Whetstone, 45, a former writer for the San Antonio Express, and Gonzalez, were married from May 1998 to October 2003. After their marriage, she received a master's degree in counseling and now specializes in family counseling. The split prompted her to set up a Web site, www.congressmanswife.com, in which she details her account of the divorce, describing strong-arm legal tactics used by Gonzalez she says left her broke and dispirited. She also alleges such behavior as infidelity and not repaying money she lent him. Gonzalez did not address specific allegations on the site, saying he wanted to remain above the fray. Political analysts are giving Whetstone little chance of defeating Gonzalez in November. He and his father, Henry Gonzalez, between them have held the seat for over 40 years. "This is a soap opera," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "It is not a real political story." |
