Vick, your assumptions on Billy Bob are wrong for two reasons: You wouldn't flick the switch HARD OVER in one shot, and second, you would try to exempt or lower the taxes on diesel fuel used by most trucking companies. You might not tax them quite as hard at the start, in a more sliding scale situation to avoid the situation you discuss...
According to one souce I found online, the US consumed in 1999 160,441 million gallons of gas. As a result of that, a 1 cent per gallon tax (not a big number) would generate 1.6 billion dollars for the government. 10 cents a gallon (not outside of normal price swings) would be 16 billion dollars. Then you turn around and give a credit back for every individual tax payer in the US - say about $100 each. Each year, add 10 cents per gallon (say 1 center per month, skip a couple of months each year) and cut taxes by $100. do that for 8 years. Suddenly, everyone is paying $800 less in direct taxes... and you have a good deterent to gas guzzling cars. This is a Bush style idea: more money in everyone's pockets to spend, which will pump up the economy. Just a thought, ya know? Alex editted for a typo Last edited by RawAlex at Jan 29 2003, 09:37 PM
