Finally watched Ray and really, really liked it. 4.5 stars
Door in the Floor - really liked this one too. One of the indies I enjoy but with big names. Jeff Bridges is awesome (and now I want a house in the Hamptons). 4 stars |

One thing they pointed out is that the movie is just the first part (section?) of the book. But the DVD extras showed that John Irving was on the set which I like since then they tend to be truer to the concept, if not word by word. Jeff Bridges really did own the movie. And it has Dakota Fanning's little sister - she's a carbon copy in both looks and is close in acting. |

I watched "Anatomy of a Scene" on Bravo i think, and they were dissecting the scene where she goes after him with a knife. really a funny scene. they had an interview with Irving in there, and he seemed overall please.
John Irving is one of my favorite authors. my mother gave me Cider House Rules for my 9th birthday, an old, hardbacked copy. I still have it. He takes a long way in winding a tale, but the characters never lose their luster. He never allows a character to sink too low or get too high, and hope is always there, even though it might be hard to see. My personal favorites are "Rules", "A Prayer for Owen Meany", and "Son of the Circus". I read his last book, "The Fourth Hand" but left feeling like it wasn't finished. kinda disappointing.

actually i think it was my 13th or 14h birthday. there was no way i would have been able to understand some of the subject matter in Cider House Rules when i was 9.
