I have an email address I use for signing up to programs, tech access, etc. I use another for online purchases.
In the past 6 months my mail box is so flooded with adult webmaster crap. Most programs want you to give a real email and inform you of updates but when they turn around and sell the list, it creates a real problem. Don’t they realize that once the email gets BOMBED that even their email will meet DELETE and never get read. It’s really frustrating. I’d like to hear how everyone else handles this. You can spend a lifetime creating filters and end up killing shit you really want. If I register to content production companies I want to make sure I get updates, however often they send to an undisclosed list. I’m cranky because it’s taking me way too long to filter through email and I have such little time. Advice? I’d also like to ask, “Is Oprano renting or selling webmaster list?” Other programs that read this…fess up! Do you or don’t you?

dianna, I get a ton of mail, I've used the same addy for so long I think I'm on every list on the damn Internet
I just go into a delete mode every day, guess I'm sorta used to it by now. We do filter a lot of stuff coming in and if we didnt I would have 100's more.I know that didnt really answer your questions but your not alone

Dianna, I tend to set up a special incoming mail account just for programs... every so often, it gets set to autodelete, and I start with a new one.
There are also some sites that I sign up to with a very specific email address, that only they get, and I wait to see who they sell it to. Sometimes it is really fun to watch all the action, as people think they get a NEW webmaster address... and they spew stuff at me like constipated monkeys... only to get no response because it got filtered. Email marketting is so over used now, that I suspect more and more surfers are tuning it out. Hooper's 17 emails at a shot is just a perfect example of overflow... plus if people even have half a brain, they will do a cause and effect thing on this, and NEVER enter the email into anything else ever. Your sponsor's message isn't that important if they are willing to lower your relationship by selling your email address. By doing that, they accepted that you wouldn't pay as much attention to them as they originally hoped. Alex

Diana, some people a in this business for the long run, and others for the quick buck.
We never sell or trade our list because we want our webmaster to like us and be receptive when we send them emails. we might lose a couple quick bucks, but we're fine with that.

I see several CQ2 affiliates using 'cashquest@theirdomainname.com' as their addy.
I think that's a feasible way of trying to sort through the crud....they know what's coming from us...and i'm sure they have otherprogram@theirdomainname.com or oprano@theirdomainname.com as well. I haven't done this....maybe I should start....lol Hope this is helpful. [added] Ya know, I just thought....this would be a good way to find out who is giving/selling what....hehe [/added] Last edited by gigi at Mar 4 2003, 12:38 PM |

This business reminds me a of a cute children’s story... I can't remember the name but it was a story of two caterpillars. One names stripe, the other yellow. Yellow was content rolling around in the grass and eating. Stripe grew restless wondering what else was out there. Each day he crawl to the caterpillar pillars where millions of caterpillars form crawling towards the sky lost in space so high you couldn’t see the top. Finally Stripe decides to join the pillars and begins a long climb towards the top…. He gets stepped on, crushed; caterpillars are falling off to their death, everyone’s angry and selfishly pushing to reach the top.
Finally, Stripe, tired and close to death reaching the top to find that there’s nothing there, only an end & yet all these caterpillars are pushing towards it. Stripe decides to fight his way back down the pillar. As he pushes he sees a beautiful butterfly fluttering around the pillar and they make eye contact. He couldn’t resist and felt a surge of excitement within. He continues down the pillar inspired by the beautiful creature fluttering him to follow. Once descended he follows the butterfly to a tree. He just seemed to know what to do and built a cocoon around himself. Soon he emerged and the two butterflies flew off. Ok the ending is corny but this industry reminds me so much of the webmaster who sees pillars in the sky thinking there’s something better at the top, never waiting to come full circle as a man/person. I have a nasty cold and may not make sense. Those who know what I’m talking about know. Those who don’t probably are still climbing pillars.

I have an account for my submissions and another for the other stuff. Lately I've been getting bombarded on the "other stuff" email with spams saying "you once submitted to our TGP so as a valued webmaster we want to share this great opportunity with you!!"
Ugh. And the amount of pure spam I get from everywhere else has me really close to just closing down that account and starting fresh. Fuck 'em. Gigi - I like that oprano@ and cashquest@ method. I think I'll start employing that once I finally hit the spam oversaturation point.

Dianna, its a pain in the ass, but unfortunately its just part of doing business on the internet ...
I use a program called 'spamkiller' which allows you to set up complex filters based on sender, text etc. anything with 'click here to remove' in it, (for example) gets 'marked' automatically and put into a different folder. i can browse it if I want to just in case it catches something important. plus, it marks all the emails it sees as 'suspicious' but leaves them in your inbox ... you can add a filter if you wish when 'new' spam tricks get used its not a perfect solution, but it cuts my email from around 450 messages per day to about 200 so its worth it i've also used the "program@domain" method for several years, but I find that it doesn't make much difference any more ;-( spammers have gotten less interested in whether they are busted selling lists etc ... especially for mainstream stuff. when I do receive it, and know where it was sent from, what do I do about it? nothing that's not an even bigger waste of time than deleting the email in the first place ... unfortunately ;-( a smart spammer will always filter out all emails with their own name/email/company in them anyway, right nick? :P |

I receive close to 800+ spams per day - thank god for http://www.digiportal.com/choicemail.html - it has an approve feature so people who send you an e-mail, and are not approved can add themself to your approve list (they will receive an e-mail with info on how to do it, when they send you an e-mail.. also you can turn this feature off)... most mass spammers do not want to use the extra time adding themself to your list, and if they do, then you can always add them to your "reject" filter later... have cut my spam down to almost zero, and I have not lost any e-mails yet
