I've run a board before and I picked a small group of foks I trusted to moderate, but none of them had ban status. They could lock threads if something got out of hand until such time as I could see the thread and decide what to do. I only banned one person while I ran the board and that was Lawrence Connor. The idea of multiple mods that have total power is a mistake.

Over the years, we've seen communities ran all sorts of ways. Some heavily moderated, some not moderated AT ALL, and yeah I've even seen some instances very similar to "mob rule" as described here.

A seasoned experienced and mature user can be given moderator privs and no one will ever know they have it. The occasional post or user might just quietly disappear when appropriate, no fuss, no fanfare.

On the other hand, give it to someone new, or someone who has an ego, or just a general lack of experience and it's like giving a 4 year old a hammer. Everything he see's will need to be pounded.

As for Oprano in particular, I haven't seen moderation or lack of being an issue. What you need is more of the people who can be the straws that stir the drink.

The whole attitude of no one is worthy of having a conversation with unless they've made $30K a month or whatever needs to go. I'm with Bishop on that one, show me you've got some brains and are willing to work, and I'm perfectly willing to show you how to make both me and you some money if you're a newbie. If they're content to work for beer money, fine, just pass one down for me every now and then and I dont mind.
