in many states there is not enough funding for psychiatric facilities and the crazies get sent to prison anyway.

Yeah I had read that.

In fact many mentally ill people considered a danger to themselves and/or others walk the streets through hospitalisation cuts.

Not only in the US , but in Canada and the UK too.

But it is more marked in the US , I believe.
