To be honest, cupcake, *had* you addressed me as "dear," it would not have registered with me as being anything other than an endearment. I lived in Kentucky for 15 years, where "dear," "honey," etc., are used by both men and women. I've never particularly liked "dearie," but more than a few waitresses have approached me with a friendly smile and said "what can I get for ya, dearie?" No offense taken as none was meant.
