I give to a lot of different charities - usually those that have touched my family in some way (yes, OK, I'm a selfish giver

). And I always give to Shriner's and the Fireman's boots. And some local ones, but that's about it

http://www.charitynavigator.org this is a great resource to track how effective charities are. Unfortunately there are a lot of scams out there.
