It's always been about volume instead of conversions, even if signups are equal or worse.
Let's say you build a TGP2 to 10,000 visitors a day, and that's not easy as you will find it hard to get volume trades. And you convert at 1:500. You have 20 signups.
Now take a regular TGP with 50,000 visitors a day. Say it converts at 1:2500 (generous for most these days). You have your same 20 signups.
BUT with the latter you have some perception of being a bigger dog. You have better branding. And you have an extra 40,000 visitors a day to do SOMETHING with. Even if you cant get 'em to signup to a paysite, you can do something with 'em.
And never underestimate how stupid newbies are. Few people in this industry really understand numbers and how to really measure what they're doing. And those that do aren't typically submitting to TGPs. If you wanna sell gallery spots for instance, you'll find that with a 50,000 a day site that converts like shit, you can still command more money than the 10,000 a day site with the better conversions. It's the same reason they send their traffic to sponsors who pay $40 per signup.
