Preferances --> General --> Windows --> Edit ... and under the sending messages header you can change 'enter' to make a new line ...
For what its worth, I use trillian all the time now ... the main problem i found is it dosen't do much other then 'chat' with the major networks. Like if you want to send and recieve files, or other multimedia functions.
If you are thinking about using trillian for the first time, id also reccommend you install a skin such as this one:

I found it easier to get the hang of it in semi-familiar suroundings.
