"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives Friday passed a broad energy bill, which includes the Bush administration's plan to allow oil drilling in an Alaskan refuge that may hold up to 16 billion barrels of crude."

Will it increase the yearly dividend? I think they need a good sales pitch. How about "A hot tub in every home!" Last edited by Colin at Apr 11 2003, 07:10 PM

I am dead set against pretyy much any new drilling...anywhere.. All you have to do is jump into the Gulf of Mexico down at Corpus or surf through oil blobs a couple of times a year in hatteras and you will understand why...
However, the powers that be are not going to be satisfied until we pump every last drop of oil out of the earth... So, get on with it, pump it dry.... Maybe then we can make some serious headway into alternatives.... http://chemcases.com/tel/tel-11.htm (and yes, I burn as much as anyone else...I like to go fast too)

I for one would rather not see any drilling there either, but it's not purely for ecological/environmental reasons.
It's a very nice ace in the hole - a mega reserve that can't be manipulated.

It would definitely help out the permanent fund which is in crisis after the past few shitty years in the stock market. Alaskans are mostly all for it, they live for those cushy jobs of yesteryear on the pipeline and the yearly permanent fund checks.
No one agrees about the amount of potential oil but even the high estimates would provide only 10% of our oil consumption for six years. The coastal plain where the think the oil is, is owned by two native corporations so I dont really understand how that works.....I guess they own only the surface land. At some point our Governor wanted to ask companies that the permanent fund has invested in to lobby votes for ANWR drilling since he thinks a company in a senators home state could influence the vote more than someone from AK. |

I'm actually pro-drilling but not yet. I agree with PD that keeping ANWR as a reserve is an excellent idea. If we drill it now, we'll consume it now.
As far as ecology, "Black is beautiful", oil drillers plant beautiful steel trees and there would begin a massive migration North of the incomparable Homo Sapiens Petroholis.

things that make me wonder sometimes..
If Mexico has so much oil why cant we get more from them ?? If China has so much oil why doesnt it export instead of Chinease companies drilling in Sudan and Lybia ? they cant drive anways Is it really cheaper to get oil in Alaska than the Gulf of Mexico ? There are hundreds if not more of unused drilling permits.

My view...
We need to drill ANWR, build the necessary pipelines, etc.; but keep it as a strategic reserve. So far, no one has built a fighter, bomber, or tank that performs satisfactorily on fuel cells. Besides, buying our consumer oil elsewhere gives us economic power.
