Loun, what you 'estimate' a site to generate per month is really just number, nothing more. When that number comes printed on check then you can talk about multiplying it across 5 sites. It's just reality, it's a lesson you learn after a few months.
Not all sites generate the same revenue: with so many variables in search rankings, linking, even your personal effort, I've found it difficult to replicate the same results for each & every site.
As far as developing your site, the most important aspect is to work out how you intend to get your traffic, what is your traffic development plan? traffic is money in this business, whether is its webmasters or surfers, building traffic = making dollars.
What will be your traffic source: google, setup a PPC strategy, work on the traffic trading model?
The establishment cost of site is so low so why start with one site, why limit yourself to just 5? Why not jump in and develop 20 to start with? $300 for domains + about $300 a month in hosting + about $300 month in content. When you scale up this model, to develop sites, it only costs about $50 per year per site, even less if you fully automate. If you run a focused operation and the average site generates 10+ signups per month then you are making a profit on your time. Even as sales drop off after 3 months, setup a plan to revisit & repeat the process again.
Replicate & Scale. Repeat. Replicate & Scale. Repeat. Replicate & Scale. Repeat.
My own traffic strategy is just like retailers: find good sources of traffic that are easy to get access to, select a niche market, develop a site specifically for that market, promote & get links for that site, build traffic, market & sell to traffic. then replicate. I spend 5 hours a day supervising site development.
Many of the most successful traffic generators in business use the same strategy, take webfather for instance, he makes money from type-in traffic to his domains, with domains like porno.com & orgy.com he makes hundreds of signups per month, but not content with that he even buys domains that may only get a few signups per month. If a domain that makes 1 sale per month only cost you $10 to buy, then you've made a profit in the first month, replicate that 100 times.
