What I would like to see, instead of witch hunting, is a solution to some of these problems. Massive downloads is a problem. I see it on my server all the time.
Surely there is a way to prevent this? Maybe a set of scripts that sets a time out after so many downloads or viewing so that the user has to keep re-entering their logon?

It would be pretty easy to do a script that would check the amount of time in between hits... If the server is getting hit from the same ip 100 times a minute, then it is software dooing the browsing not a person...
Of course, at that point you are running everything through the script, or at least all image hits.. So, it is a trade off bandwidth wise...
What I have been doing when I see any of these supposed revolutionary ideas is I download the software or go to the webpage if they are a proxy scheme, I hit my sites to see if the miracle program works against my sites... Then I look through the logs to find the various traces that these things invariably leave and then I beef my htaccess up against that particular signature....
