"People with kidney disease are failing to receive potentially-life saving dialysis because of a serious shortage of machines, research has found. The National Kidney Research Fund (NKRF) surveyed 71 kidney units providing dialysis on the NHS. It found that 12 units had been forced to turn away patients during 2001 because they could not cope with demand."

"I could die before I even get to have the operation. "It's just a ridiculous amount of time to wait." He says he feels suicidal at times, cannot sleep, and can hardly walk. Mr Sturgess says he cannot afford a private operation, which would cost up to £10,000. However, he has been told he will have to wait at least two months to see a dietician and a further four months for an appointment with psychologist before he could have surgery.

yet they have saved my husbands life atleast twice and helped me through a major health issue without me having to go bankrupt.
Yes, there are a lot of problems but I would rather some healthcare than none at all which is the fate of many in the USA (and I am not knocking the USA, I'm American afterall). In short: Nothing is perfect but doesn't mean it should be given up on.

Campaigners have called on ministers to ban a vaccine which is routinely given to newborn babies. They say there is growing concern that a mercury compound in the three-in-one DTP vaccine may cause autism and brain damage ------------ i did not know you could inject babies with mercury. i always thought mercury was toxic. after looking on the web, i see its only slightly more toxic than lead or arsenic and afterall, babies are pretty resilient so maybe its ok.

Twenty seven chronic heart failure patients aged 38-94 were interviewed about the effect their condition had on their everyday lives. Most patients lacked a clear understanding of why they had developed heart failure, what it was, and what this implied for them. Many felt that their symptoms were a result of growing older and believed that nothing could be done. Although some patients were apparently unaware of their likely prognosis, most patients saw death as inevitable, but felt that doctors were reluctant to talk about death or dying. One patient stated: "I think they like to keep things away from the patient." ------------------

Many heart patients say that doctors fail to consult them over their care or to properly explain their treatment. A national NHS survey of patients treated in hospital for heart disease also found that one in three patients requiring non-urgent care had to wait more than six months for hospital admission. The survey found that nearly one in five (18%) felt they were not sufficiently involved in decisions about their care. The NHS must listen to patients and give them a stronger voice Gisela Stuart, Health Minister Patients said doctors talked about them as if they are not there, did not tell them what is going on and did not consult them about their treatment. "The UK has one of the worst records in Europe in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, even though it accounts for more deaths than any other disease."
