The catch with anything "legal" here is where's the juristiction? Assange isn't a U.S. citizen.

BUT... he knowingly accepted information that was clearly both stolen and highly classified. he then in turn distributed it at least indirectly for profit since he did have income streams coming from the site.

Everything that has followed has been predictable. A british jail may be safest place for him right now. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a car with him when he hits the starter.
