Has it always been like this?

Ok I am a relatively young guy. 30 this past November. I was always kind of a partyer and a fly by the seat of my pants type. Never really was interested in the news or world politics. I guess the past 5 or 6 years, I have really been a news hound, especially when it comes to the US and foreign affairs. I would imagine this has been coming on because I have matured past all the parties and bar hopping etc. My question is, has there always been this overbearing feeling of impending doom? It seems like there is nothing but "the sky is falling" reports on every news station available. The ever falling dollar, iraq, iran, N.Korea etc etc etc (and etc) Has it always been like this or am I just waking up to it?
