My big fault with eBay isn't any fear of getting scammed. It's the damned sniping of bids. For an item where there are actually competing bidders, it comes down to being a contest of who can get the very last bid in before the auction expires.

When I was buying a lot on Ebay, I had a program (I'll look around for the name - I think it was $20 or so) that put in a bid within a user decided time before the bid was over. You put in the highest you were willing to go, and it would jump in there and bid that amount before the auction was over. I think I set mine at 1 minute. This kept those that didn't have a higher bid on file from having time to get an email, and rebid.

It also allowed you to leave and not have to worry about babysitting the auction.
