The thing is the FTC doesn't move fast enough and the penalties aren't severe enough. When it's a consumer repayment plan like Crescent was forced to do, by the time someone gets their ass kicked it's 3 years later and most of those charges are long long forgotten and never claimed.
For the hardcore scammer and thief this makes them more inclined to take risks and just treat the FTC as cost of doing business. Do you really care if end up paying back $100 million in fines and refunds, if you made $150 million? |
