let it rip kids... give those boys in NO something to make them feel good.. it wont take much, get them on tv.. they are in the middle of HELL
this is not spam, or an ad opportunity, we want these guys who are risking life and limb to do their job. NANOG has already said this about them Received-SPF: none (crufty.chroot.net: domain at merit.edu does not designate permitted sender hosts) Message-ID: <4315B4FF.8090307@LainOS.org> Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 15:47:43 +0200 From: Chris Gilbert <Chris@LainOS.org> User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) To: nanog@merit.edu Subject: Katrina: directNIC Stays Online - Blog + Images References: <OF0F1D761A.B3CECAAD-ON8025706E.004837FC-8025706E.00490744@radianz.com> In-Reply-To: <OF0F1D761A.B3CECAAD-ON8025706E.004837FC-8025706E.00490744@radianz.com> For those that don't know, directNIC as well as some other NOCs are located together in a high-rise in New Orleans. Despite everyone's warnings (including my own!) some tough-as-nails guys from directNIC stayed behind to battle the hurricane and keep the networks online. [snip] While the safety of our staff is paramount and most were safely evacuated, a small group of key personnel stayed behind to safeguard our data center and make sure that all of our services remained online and stable. During this time, while we spent a great deal of effort battling broken windows, incoming water, and flying debris, our hosting and registration services remained online and worked flawlessly. [/snip] Link: http://www.directnic.com/katrina.php (Pictures too!) It also mentions the power shortage, and that they are using diesel generated power. I remember a week or two ago people were talking about building redundant datacenters, off-grid power, failure mitigation, etc. I think if nothing else, this is at least a success story of building a NOC which can provide critical infrastructure that will survive major disasters. -- Regards, Chris Gilbert ----- End forwarded message ----- the netops world is in awe of the intestinal fortitude of these guys. i myself am very worried about them, to sickness even.. these are my friends, my brothers. for gods sake just pray for them. this is anarchy -Matt http://mgno.com/
