There is a big difference between modern "muslims" and "islamists"... why do think "muslims" have been fleeing from "islamists" (conservative religious) and "wahhabist" (even more conservative religious). To become a muslim it only takes that you belive that "Allah is the only God and Muhammad is his messenger", which takes about 3 sec. to say... Now if I want to be a islamist, then I will have to devote my life to study of the Qur'an, and if I want to be a wahhabist, then I have to live as the first muslims on earth and see everyone else who do not as heretics (even other muslims).
