Default 35 million names registered in April. 32 million were part of a kiting scheme

Very interesting read, would love to get MikeAI's take on all this

http://www.bobparsons.com/DomainKiting.html

Quote:
In a nutshell, here's how domain kiting works.
Domain kiting registrars put up mini-Web sites — loaded with search engine links — for domains names for which they never pay. When people land on these Web sites and click on the links, money is made. It's easy to spot one of these registrars as the number of total registrations they make often far exceed the number of permanent registrations — or names for which they actually pay. This is why during the month of April 2006, out of 35 million registrations, only a little more than 2 million were permanent or actually purchased. The vast majority of the rest were part of the domain kiting scheme.

Now let's drill down a little further into domain kiting 101.
A registrar who participates in this scheme – Go Daddy and its affiliates do not participate in this scheme – makes a large deposit – sometimes a huge deposit – at a registry. Then the registrar registers as many domain names as the deposit will allow. For example, if the registrar makes a $600,000 deposit at VeriSign Registry, they could register 100,000 .COM domain names as .COM names cost $6.00 per year.

It's all about catching Internet traffic.
For each domain name registered, the domain kiting registrar puts up a simple Web site filled with search engine links and hopes users land on that page and click on the links. Anytime an Internet user lands on one of their mini-Web sites and clicks on one of the links, money is made.
Quote:
Meet DirectNIC.
You might find the registration statistics of DirectNIC somewhat interesting. DirectNIC registered more than 8.4 million domain names in April 2006, but only permanently registered — or paid for — 51.4 thousand of those. The trend was the same in March, when DirectNIC registered 7.6 million names and only permanently registered — or paid for — 52.5 thousand. Whatever could DirectNIC be doing? Why are they dropping and re-registering all those names – again – and again – and again? And why doesn’t ICANN care?

interesting however i will talk from the webhosting side of registering.

customers not always pay ontime which leads to a lot of expiring and re-registering

if directnic would have say 9k(to say a number) companies like mine registering domains it makes sense why they have those crazy numbers.

i know companies that do the domain kit but they usually use established domain selling ones to buy

for example there is a guy in panama that is doing dns for 75,0000 domains making him number 1 in the country when the rest of the regular companies are just reaching 1k domains on their dns and their dns are like non hosting related dns or some weird name like ns.gambling1.com etc.

which brings me to the point of instead of just posting and waiting for someone's response you may want to do some research so you don't sound like you are picking a fight in a subject you really do not know much off.

Inabon, it is good to see we can agree on something.

Bob Parons is a crybaby. The man sells domains at cost, and then upsells customers on every little option and makes it very inconvienent to transfer domains In my opinion, his business model copies the Join for Free porn websites.

Sig is in the process of drafting a full rebutal, I told him it is not worth the time - but Mr. Parsons had hired some big time lobbyists to try and get Congress to change things.

Reminds me of a booke I just read, How Capitalism Saved America : The Untold History of Our Country, from the Pilgrims to the Present by Thomas Dilorenzo

Quote:
Extremely important to understand is his early distinction between what he calls "true capitalism" - some would call it "free market" or "laissez faire" capitalism - versus "state capitalism" or "mercantilism" in which governments intervene in the markets to protect (e.g., with high tariffs against foreign competitors or even with grants of monopoly, as NY State granted to Fulton's steamship company) and to favor certain businesses (e.g., with subsidies or restrictive laws and regulations). As he correctly emphasizes, there is not much free market capitalism remaining in the U.S. today. He makes the same distinction between "market" entrepreneurs, who are his heroes (e.g., James J. Hill, John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Bill Gates ...), and "political" entrepreneurs (e.g., Leland Stanford, Jay Cooke, Edward Collins ...), who relied on government favors ("corporate welfare"), leading to corruption and sometimes bankruptcy, and who - together with the politicians who favored them - are his villains.
Some businesses cannot operate in the open market and must turn to the government to tilt the playing field towards them. I guess that what happens when you charge cost for a product and hope to upsell your customers on other services. Eveentually the Customers become savvy to this.

I read a lot of people thinking Parsons is a friend of the industry. Bob Parsons has publically stated that he has a beef with the online adult industry.

If your registering domains with Godaddy for adult sites you are crazy.

that is wierd, but it also does just look like someone whining that they lost their domain...i mean, if I have a domain about to expire that I want to keep, I renew it before the date so it never goes into redemptionperiod, this guy actually let it go into redemptionperiod, and whether it was cut short or not, that was a stupid thing to do

Did I miss something here? I see no rebuttal. I would think that would take all of five minutes. Was it deleted or was it never "crafted". I just see some Karl Rovesque spin going on. I actually would like to hear the other side of the story, not just an attack on a competitor's business. Excuse me if I missed the rebuttal, I apologise in advance. I am sure we would all like to hear the Directnic version of events. The numbers seem a bit damning to me, but you do need to hear both sides of any story to make an informed opinion.

Fuck Bob Parsons!

I don't wish ill on too many people but he is at the top of my list, for years he has fought our industry, while still lining his pockets from us.

I remember what in 2001 or 2002 Bob snatched back around 2,000 adult domain names for (spam or whatever) his reason was per domain and then SOLD THEM to other webmasters at a higher cost (you won't find alot of refference to this mind you, but it did in fact happen and i'm sure there are some of you who were there and remember.

my favorite FUCK YOU That Bobby boy has given us was a few years ago, after spending over 2 years being very vocal on his out right HATE of our industry he hires that (pornstar?) or fashion model to mock the famous superbowl nipple slip on his TV Spot, once again profitting off what he hates soo damn much.

he has a weekly radio show now, for like the past year or so, my partner and I managed to get on his debute show, it went well till he discovered we were "smut dealers" then he ripped into us and hung up

fuck him and pretty much anything that he has to do with!

This seems like standard business to me. Hell, even Ikea has been known to do that. Porn webmasters have been doing that for years. That is old school to the max. What is the problem. That seems like a good business model to me.
Ya give em the phone and ya charge them for the airtime. Am I missing something here?

Well, as Serge Oprano and Mike AI have said in the past. He was just teaching the suckers a lesson. But he is rich and you are not...I might be wrong about that, but it is a pretty good guess. This is where "old school" falls apart. When old school is outfoxed, it whines. BTW, Loki, this is not personal, but directed at "old school" as a unit.

BTW, none of this has anything to do with the accusations he has posted. So far no one has disputed them, only attacked the source. I am waiting for someone to show that none of his allegations are true. It is not looking good, because if they are true, then this really sucks the big one.

nope sorry it' just all about greed, same as Paypal did to us around the same time, took the money and ran, using our 'jobs' as a way to justify what they did.

cause fuck who is gonna stick up for scumsucking porn peddlers? a handfull of lawyers maybe, a even smaller group of big wigs maybe again. but in the end ANYONE can pretty much rape and pillage us then jump on their high horse and claim the moral ground.

this has nothing to do with old school / new school in fact what the fuck does have to deal with old/new school other then some bullshit message board egos?

this is about fraud and us (ALL OF US) getting screwed not one lil group, there was no lesson taught, cause it is an ongoing deal.

heres a lil tip....

goto goflabby and LOOK UP an adult name, (don't buy it) just look it up, and make it real freaky, something only you would want to own.

do it the next day

then do it monday..... bet it's taken by then, but yeah Goflabby is a great company and bob's just looking out for everyone lol

(ps, as for proving bob wrong, it's bob he allways been full of shit, all he does is spout off gurilla marketing tactics and chicken little bullshit to boost his sales)

I am sure. I hate George Bush. He lies like a mattress and is as incompetant as a lemming. However, sometimes, he makes good points. I guess what I am saying here is that no one has refuted his allegations about intercosmos directnic etc. No one.
You can shoot the messenger if you like, but is the message true? I am asking for proof that it is not. His numbers and if you do a little googling, tend to back his claims. But that could all be a crock of shit but no one here has denied the claims.

ok, i'm starting to feel like the smartest kid with down syndrom here......

Why refute his words? when pretty much EVERYONE knows his agenda and his own marketing tricks? if you 'try' to prove him wrong it only brings HIM more attention, KNOCK KNOCK, Hi common sence here you called for me??

anyway, it's as plain as the nose on my face, Bob spouts off shit, sheep heard over to his "safe and honest" company LOL and the others sit quiet cause if they speak up to 'prove him wrong' he will just get on his blog, newsletters and radio show and gloat how he was sooooo right.

in a way Bob is alot like O'riely lol

OK, what you are saying is that Bob is lying and is one hundred per cent wrong. None of his allegations hold any water and Sig et al are totally blameless in this. So there is not truth to these allegations and they are outright, unsubstantiated lies meant to besmerch a totally honest company because they are pornographers.

I am looking for one person, especially from the company who has been called out, to say these accusations are totally false and that any further investigation will never show any sign of wrong doing....like whipping names. That seems pretty straightforward and easy to me.
