There's no way in hell I'd create a directory on my server and CHMOD it to 777 so some other fucker's script could get access... even if the script does reside on my server….
They choose the sponsors from a list of tested and proven sponsors… damn.. that’s fantastic… there's no way I could do that all on my own. Hell yeah I'll send my traffic to your list of sponsors and I'll give you 1 out of every 20…

once I know what directory the cgi is in, I can have all sorts of fun fucking with the server. Because I can download your code, I am sure I could find ways to overload things and get the server to shut down.
You built it backwards. Open YOUR server up chmod 777 and let the remote sites connect to you... no wait, that wouldn't be very secure, now would it?

Was talking about this kind of stuff with several people at the show. I've seen some clever spins using scripts, and they're getting more and more bold about allowing themselves gratuitous access to your server, your bandwidth and your traffic. If someone is giving a script away for free, raise an eyebrow. They're getting their's somehow...
Best one I received recently was for a script that prevented spam from the server level. However, the company "giving it away" is a company who I know for a fact sold our addresses when using one of their other scripts. And I'm to give them access to my whole contact list? Yeah, right...
I'm not picking on Joe here by the way, I haven't even looked at his script, I'm just talking about scripts in general.
Opti, instead of leaving all these different servers wide open, why not just put a cron tab on each server and have the remote sites contact one central site?
Instead, this system leaves hundreds of servers with wide open code, accessible by anyone who knows where to look.
Just poor design from the word go - and has the potential to be a major fuckover in the future. Imagine someone figures out a little hack and turns all those servers into DOS attack machines instead? Leaving that many machines open like that is just not a good plan.

It's actually quite easy to set up a secure SSL transfer.
This guy is obviously a pretty good programmer but simply chose a route that was not secure. A few years back he might have got away with it - but now everyone and his uncle seems to be a hacker.
Personally I see merit in this program - as long as it's secure. It'd be great if he could modify the system - if not I guess it's a non-starter.
His program *could* help generate more traffic for a management fee of only 5% of traffic - and if you try it and don't like it? You can remove it. If a new secure version of this comes out I'll try it.

first, 90% of the newb wevmasters out there dont even know how to upload a script to a server. the main reason i did it this way. Nice and simple.
second, the script is password protected.
third, you can rename the script yourself and modify the settings in de remotethumbs interface ...
forth, Normally a webserver runs a "nobody".

I am not arguing with you about potential security issues Trev (or anyone else) but I am not a total dumby, I looked at it and personally feel comfy with it.. I know they can steal clicks from me but I am just not paronoid about that.
btw, the sponsorlist is self configurable.. and I had no trouble finding enough I liked to fill all slots I needed.
Anyways... like Joe said.. Boldy is a master of customer service and seems to have it under control ;-)

If you want some fodder for conspiracy theories... when I first set it up I changed the code so the gallery links ran via a simple php script on my server.. I used it to check click counts but was mainly just so the links on that page all pointed internally instead of to the remotethumbs domain. It worked fine for a week or so then suddenly my links were all redirecting to some tgp site.. it appearred like boldy had blocked me linking that way, likely blocked all head requests rather than me in particular I thought at the time... been meaning to email boldy and ask why that happened.. but like I said in another thread.. I am not into TGP stuff so it wasnt a priority.
As far as why use it at all... there is 1200 thumb images updated dailly here http://www.sleekssickestporn.com/galleries/ I wouldn't be buying content god just to do that.. I wouldnt be doing it at all if not for remotethumbs.. maybe it wont be worth the effort, but it wasnt much effort and now i will know for myself. Anyone, even the technically challenged, could setup the same thing in an hour or two.

OK, then for all the nay sayers that are pointing out potential problems, first of all thank you for your feedback.
allow me to ask this question-- I have not been around long (less than a year) as most of you know. Since I have been around the boards, the number one accusation I hear when talking about sponsors, is the shave factor. (in fact it is even built into several programs from what I understand) I hear several things about this.
1.) if coming from an experienced webmaster-- the comment is usually something like this, " if you feel you ARE getting shaved (as oppossed to could possibly be shaved at sometime) then do not use the program, as you obviously do not trust the people, or the program to do what they say they will" I would ask for, and expect, no other treatment from any of you experienced webmasters. ( now ask yourself this question- " of what benifite would it be to us, to do something shady or detrimental to our users, that have such experience? if we were to do that, would this conversation, as well as conversations on every board not ruin our reputation so bad as to put us completly out of the industry? since this program is directly related to needing GOOD knowledgebal industry personell to work benificially? at the very least, on the sponsor side! then it seems obvious to me, that Good positive win/win situations must occur in order to spread the succsess of any program (relationships are too hard to come by, and we value the word of mouth way of doing business in this industry too much, to try for the quick buck, we are here to stay! and that can only happen if we are honest! you know that and so do we! ( I watch people that their only mission is to show other people how much smarter they are than the next guy ,all to often, it would be suicide for me for to attempt something as bold as to shave some of the people here. hell in fact I believe some of the people here even invented the shave , is that not correct? I certainly do not pretend to be smarter than many of you ( I often joke, but we all know that if I was to attempt something shady like shaving, from this program, you would make the crucifiction of Christ look like a sunday school picnic ,compared to the scorn I would suffer. ) I have no interest in doing anything shady in the first place, but like has been said Trust me = fuck you more times than not. I am not asking you to trust me. I am asking you to try a program, and see if you recieve benifites from it that you are satisfied with. and to trust in yourself, that you know when and what if something is not correct with your stats! you obviously will be able to tell, if you use some of your programs that you are familiar with already very intimatly in order to test this theory!
I will save number two for another post, as it concerns the non experienced webmasters point of view, and I know that most people on Oprano, are in the first category.

I am trying to perfect my systems, so any feedback I get from you is great. have you seen the www.420calendar.com site lately?
it has improved, and we are taking it in a direction in order to build mass traffic on it from all search engines we can pull in. It is becoming a portal, that we will try to make sticky. I am looking for programs, and content to fill it with as we speak, we hope to launch it in another couple of weeks.
Please take a look, and tell me if you have anything that would fit on it.
Or feel free to contact me after we execute our strategy, and I have a good traffic program to send you some ood traffic.
We are not going anywhere, and will keep improving on our stuff, by getting feedback from all concerned . so thank you for your opinions.

and as far as the 420 thing goes, I am also going to have news, sports, and non 420 related things in their own categories sell non adult, and adult products, and paysites from it. as well as have a section for political debate on any issue, I am going to set it up like crossfire, and have someone from the right, and someone from the left so that both sides of every argument are heard, and people can judge things on the merrits as they see them .
In doing this, I hope to drag in all kinds of search engine traffic, as I will possess an unlimited number of subjects for keywords. The 420 aspect of it will actually be just a catylist if all works well.

90% of the people bashin it here didnt even signup to have a look how it really works. The remote server is not wide open. Its a cgi-script on your server which need to write to a certain directory which has to be 777, just because most apache servers run as nobody and can't do jack shit on the filesystem.
Second you have to put a password in our interface which is generated on the script you have to upload. These passwords have to match.
You can rename the script to any name you want. name it ajskhjasASDASasdjkashdka893489273myass.cgi and a hacker will have a hard time finding it.
The script is a readable perl script, feel free to analyze it and see for yourself we dont have any intentions of cheating on our clients.

TGP's are not even my core biz,just a little besides thing,cause I like to see what converts nowadays and to test some google reactions as far as pagerank / linking and listing goes.
I like the service and I don't feel bad about the 5% traffic I send their way.
Both Joe and Boldy I've met in person and they are in my book.
I like honest straight people,the best to do biz with.
If you don't feel like even looking at it closer don't come here and bash something you don't know. Makes you guys,gals and Oprano look pretty amateurish and little,cause hating is littleminded.
