Does anyone here subscribe to the high speed wireless internet services offered by cell phone companies like Verizon, alltel, etc?
They have been advertising a lot locally, and it seems to be pretty convenient. $90/mo for high speed anywhere I go with my laptop. What is your opinion?

Hey Sharky,
I've been using the sprint cdma card for about 8 months now (i guess i'm an early adopter). In Austin it's pretty slow. I'm in Boston now on it and would say it's about as fast as an aol 56k dialup. Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Florida, New York, Los Angeles.. I've used it pretty much everywhere you can imagine and overall it's 100% worth it (i think i pay 80 bucks a month) just because the ability to turn on your computer when you have a layover, are in a hotel with fucked phone lines, dont need dialup anymore, are sitting on the plan waiting for takeoff, are on the road and need directions real quick, etc..etc..etc.. Overall: I give it a B- They advertise 128kbs speeds and never have i seen better than half that. Surf with images and flash turned off and it's quite tolerable. IM works wondefully too. BTW.. totall off topic, but i just started on a 1970 Chateau Latour... and thus far it is fuckin amazing. Will report back again later ;-) Last edited by Hooper at Jul 5 2003, 08:48 PM

Yeah Mike. i think Alltel has been advertising it recently. I'll look for the brochure and give you some info this comign week.
Hooper... thanks for the reply. upon a little more research i see it is the CDMA that you are talking about is what I am thinking of. I only wish we were talking 1/2 T1 speeds:-))

Wireless internet as referenced for cellphones isn't exactly high speed. 56K is a reasonable expectation regardless of whether it is CDMA or GSM. If you're in excellent coverage you might get a tad better.
It's excellent for internet functions on your cellphone or on your PDA. It's not bad for checking email on a notebook in a pinch. But I wouldn't wanna try to do any real work on it. I have it on my cellphone. I use it to get certain emergency emails and notifications that are too big to come in via SMS alone. It's also handy for looking up phone numbers (online white and yellow pages). And you can do silly tricks like looking for nearest businesses to your current location by category (restaurant, etc) or name. It can even do mapquest type tricks. And in a pinch I can pull up any website, but unless it is designed with some WAP pages, it'll look like hell. I probably use it to check movie showtimes and sports scores more than anything else. So it's really more of a toy than a tool. Now if you happen to be near a "hot spot", these give you some real speed. But they're based on 802.11b, so you have bigtime range limitations. For instance, most Starbucks are now hot spots, so you can use your notebook and wireless card to surf on their T-1 while having coffee. Most airports have hot spots in the lounges as well. These are going to spread and the technology will get better. I think we're rapidly approaching the day we'll be able to turn on our notebooks and have instant internet with coverage as good as we currently have for cellphones. But we're not there yet. |
