Paysite Demographics

With all the new "reality" stuff coming up, I went searching for paysite members "demographics"...its a must for the commercial industry.

Advertisers know the age, sex and ave. income of almost every product bought, tv show watched, etc.

Am I just missing finding this information for adult paysites...is it necessary or even needed?

photogregg, I think we have our own version of 'demographic' marketing techniques ...

our industry doesn't need to market down to the zip code, we don't really care where the person is from (provided their cc works) ... the only difference in what we are selling them is the type of sex, and the 'demographics' of how this traffic moves are available to anyone who runs an affliate program, 3rd party processor, hosting service etc

instead of marketing to 1 city or a few states based on demographic researcb, you are marketing to every person who types in 'sex' ... there's the 1st step of your demographics ... step 2 is marketing to 'teen' etc

in porn, we want the age (18+), the niche the person wants to sign up to, email address and their credit card number

same thing really!!

I always compare porn business to las vegas ...

you walk into 1 hotel, with its jazzy frontend ... on the inside is the same stuff, with different plaster statues ... so you try to get back out onto the street where there are more frontends to choose from, and you end up on an escalator to the next casino, where you have no choice but to walk THROUGH the casino, only to be shot onto another escalator.

If anyone has ever walked from mgm grand to new york new york to mandalay bay you'll know exactly what i mean ... sucked right in by the lights, and there you are, lost in a room full of florida pensioners playing pokies ... demographics doesn't matter that much once your there - you WILL buy something, or lose some money!

Interesting input cj...but I see some of customers spending big $$$ building new custom content reality sites...and I'd like to produce the content that reaches "their audience". Who buys mature...are they young or old...who buys teens...who signups then recurs the longest for 2 guy/girl hardcore pickup stuff...young guys, older guys, how many are women?

I would think that members sections should have some kind of "prize, contest", etc, and ask demographic info...find out which type of customers are the regulars, recurring and what they want.

those kind of demographics are not necessary in the adult Net biz.

it's one big demographic - PORN SURFER. What's important to know about him is what niches he likes. It doesn't matter if he's a twenty three year old college kid who likes big breast reality porn or a 60 year old with a lot of money who likes big breast reality porn.

The more specific kind of demographic profiling would be useful if this biz worked like more traditional forms of advertising. If you were buying banner space on a CPM basis, then it's good to know something more about who those anonymous surfers are. But us guys already know this stuff, TRAFFIC TALKS, it doesn't take long to find out if a site has traffic that converts for whatever niche you're selling.

Also people are very unpredictable when it comes to porn, you can have all amateur traffic, the guy has found you because that's what he wanted, either through a search engine, link site, traffic trade with other amateur sites..........THEN he goes right off the board and he clicks and joins a tranny site off an exit console. Go figure. It's a beautiful thing.

I think Gregg's clients are new to this maybe and they want some kind of way of doing market research or buying advertising based on demographics.

Paysite owners could do this kind of research if they wanted to.
But in the end what would be gained? So you found out amateur niche customers are older and and more educated, less likely to be married, earn an average of 62,000 dollars per year. What does that do for you?

Porn is the lowest common denominator. practically everybody with a buck in their pocket is a potential buyer.

maybe i'm wrong...........i dunno........doesn't seem to me knowing a lot of information about who's buying and who's not buying does much for you.

well most people do some geographic filtering to get rid of countries who are just bandwidth suckers, and to filter out some Euros to dialers because of their comfort with them.

ok, maybe it would be a little bit advantageous to know more about them. I don't think much, but more information can't hurt.

PhotoGregg, I totally see what you are referring to ... the point i was trying to make is that demographics is probably the wrong word in this industry, or that our demographics are not the same as mainstream ... like mutt said, it doesn't help you to know the age or annual income or location of house - you just want them either a) at your site or somewhere else ... the somewhere else is where the market research comes in but it already exists in almost every company who directs traffic ...

Personally, I have a great interest in the demographics of my members - especially on my womens sites. But, i'm also at an advantage. Women will complete a form for prizes before returning to the erotic features ... men are there to wank and could give a shit about getting a cd/prize for filling in a form. I have gathered a lot of demographic data over the 4 years of purve ... here's what i discovered ...

1) some women buy porn, some don't
2) some straight men buy women's porn
3) some gay men buy women's porn
4) some older women buy porn
5) some younger women buy porn
6) most women can be found surfing mainstream sites such as astrology, sexual education, etc (ie, this is the only important & effective piece of demographic information i have gathered in 4 years of constant surveys & data collection)

At the end of all of this research, what i have learned is that the most successful marketing is those who market into mainstream and bring those women into adult.

All the other bits of information do nothing to assist my marketing efforts and they don't make me any more money ... I only do thus because I intend to market women's products into mainstream eventually.

So, I guess it all depends on your business plan ... but the cart has to come before the horse (ie, the traffic before the demographic data)

I can honestly say that I don't buy porn or look for it on the web. I wonder if this is because I'm in the industry?

I will, however read hot stories if I know the writers work and it's been consistantly good.

Knowing my members pretty well-

Most are curious average Joes who have fantasies that remain in their head.
At least 20% have followed me through my career and buy all my work.
10% are couples, maybe higher now that I have Sex Slave Academy.
5% women who come to learn more about femdom.

I think there's a lot of women that would enjoy good porn/erotica. I think audio is really hot if it's done right. Even I enjoy that. The trick is finding good male voices to record it.

Just wanted to put my two cents in. I agree with CJ and Mutt our demographic is the surfer's interest in what niche.

But going back to the original thought of what is considered the normal, mainstream concept of demographics (geography, income, etc.) ... if you had it, exactly what could you do with it?

After all, isn't the reason for collecting demographic information primarily to know where to advertise? So you find out a porn surfer is, say, over 60, drives luxury cars and travels a lot. Now what are you going to do with that? Take out advertising at AARP, Cadillac and Orbitz for your cumshots site? Don't think so. :P
