At first glance, this picture of some people in Switzerland burning an American flag pisses me off, but then I realize I'm not that pissed...the reason? The flag is a symbol and a piece of cloth, which is flammable and will burn when touched with fire, but they can NEVER burn what we have...that intangible, that sense of freedom. They can burn all the flags they want, but it doesn't lessen what we have in this country. Where even the moron's speech is as sacred as the scholar's speech, where those on both sides of an issue are both right and wrong, where we can watch 500 channels of nothing on, yet everything is on.

What we have can never be summed up but some dyed cloth, rather, it's what's in our hearts and our heads. My father didn't fight for a piece of cloth, he fought for an ideal. My gandfather was the same way. So are the millions of soldiers out there fighting for that ideal. I don't agree 100% with everything we do with our military, but I respect the men and women who are sworn to uphold that ideal.

Patriotism is not about waving a flag (that was probably sewn in China anyways) it's about keep that ideal alive in doing what we do....it's about respecting what we have and respecting what others have...it's not about a piece of cloth, it's about something that can never be taken out of the intangible and something that those who can't appreciate it, never will appreciate it. Fuck them!

i think that people who pride themselves on their neutrality and emphatically protest against joining the international community in any political way, should not be protesting anything or burning any flags.

It does piss me off a little but really don't have a huge issue with the American flag being burned in other countries

I do have huge issue with American's burning the American flag
I will defend the right to burn the flag, I will also reserve the right to hang my foot in the ass of anyone who chooses to do so

The American Flag is a symbol of all that America is and all that American stands for, you spit on that symbol and you desecrate all that symbol stands for and all those who have served to protect America

All in my family didn't serve for a piece of cloth, but the ideals and liberty that piece of cloth represents. Disrespect to that symbol is disrespect to American and all those who have served, worked and died for this country, including me and my family

I can't justify spitting on the Flag because it is only a symbol and not the ideals, partly because what happens next, you spit on the Constitution because it's only a piece of paper, you piss on the Jefferson Memorial because it's only a building

Allowing or accepting these acts leads to and shows an extreme disrespect for American, all it stands for and all those who have sacrificed and served

I'm not blindly preserving idols, I'm respecting all they entail

That picture pisses me off more than 1000 pictures of burning flags...

But, I also believe it's an important picture...we need those kinds of images to show us the tragedy that is war. It's not pretty and it certainly isn't like a Rambo movie...I think both peaceniks and warhawks alike need to be exposed to the horrors of war...
