Nick's young. Not only is he young, but he's a very immature young who has also had to deal with some personal tragedy in his life. Not excusing him for having dogshit all over his apartment and not returning the items to Brad that was left for him, but Brad hired him for entertainment hoping he would do some work too. That didn't work out.
I don't think he's a bad person, just young and confused.
