I'm not laughing at you, I'm just trying to help you understand.
The surfer might be annoyed but we're not in business to make surfers happy, we're in business to keep our members happy. Sure, they won't become members if we piss them off first, but the whole point of a properly done exit is to do it in such a way that you don't annoy them.
Look, say someone come to your wife's website and you have a properly installed exit script. The way it should work, the surfer will be able to navigate to all the pages in the tour and even click to go to the join page without ever triggering your popup. It's not until they leave your site completely that the exit pops, and at that point, why would you care about the ones that are annoyed, they didn't buy from you anyway and probably won't be back. The chances that a simple exit pop with no chain attached would piss them off enough that they never will come back if they might have planned on it is slim, but if they never were coming back, it does give you another shot at making something from them.
