I remember sitting on the couch holding hands with my husband (I was in tears, his eyes were just glistening) as we went into major debt with the nice saleslady from Encyclopedia Britannica. We'd purchased a brand new, up-to-date set of encyclopedias for our children. It was one of the biggest events in our lives. (This was pre-internet.) I used to just touch them some days and pick a volume and open it at random at other days.

I had two growls. One was "look it up!" The other was "look it FUCKING UP!"

(OK, three growls. "If you DON'T FUCKING LOOK IT UP, I'm going to grab a volume and beat you with it!!!!" They knew that was an empty threat, though. Mommy would *never* abuse a book like that.)
