I read a variety of things - American History, European History, a smattering of Asian history, International Affairs since 1870, American Civil War history, political biographys, political autobiographies, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam. There is an off-the-wall assortment of fiction in there too.
For my mental "junk food" I've gone through a number of phases. I got into fantasy for a long wihile (read all the Shannara books, the Thomas Covenent Unbeliever books), the Dragonriders of Pern, etc. Was into science fiction for a long time - my grandson now has a gateway computer box full of all kinds of stuff, including just about anything Allen Dean Foster ever wrote that wasn't Star Trek.
Lately my junk food has been either True Crime (there's Ann Rule and everybody else) or detective novels (most recent "discovery" is Ed McBain; I "discovered" him 72 books into a series he started writing in the 50s, and about six weeks before he died).
